At times when I start my '99 Vette, the DIC displays "Corvette by Chevrolet," then the odometer reading. It will stay there until I cancel it. Any ideas about why this is happening time to time?
If this happens when the car has been sitting for some time (overnight or longer) and when it never happens during daily driving, the car's battery might be getting weak (internal resistance increases). The starter draws a big current and the battery voltage will momentarily drop to a point where the computer resets the dic readings back to default (odometer).
Do you still have a stock battery in the car? What year is your car?
Also check if the battery terminals are clean and tight. Dirty or loose battery terminals increase the resistance as well.
I cleaned mine and put some Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline) on the terminals to avoid corrosion.

It happens when your battery is not at full charge. Trying charging the battery fully with a long drive or a battery charger first. It that doesn't do it, I think you should look into a new battery if your DIC is showing 14.2 volts or more when driving. If it is lower than that checking the charging circuit may be warranted. It's my long winded way of saying your battery is low and needs further checking. Also may be caused by a bad connection. Check the battery posts.

that's because you have programed the DIC to always display the odometer. Instead of pressing the clear/reset: button, cycle the "trip odo" button until nothing displays.
update:
ooops; you said "some of the time". Might not be what I originally thought.
Re: Odometer display when car starts?? (vettefool)
my 98 does this on rare occasions  new optima battery installed a few momths ago and I don't remember it happening lately.
I'm not sure what the original poster was really saying but after a no voltage/low voltage situation the DIC defaults to the odometer. So if you had left the DIC with any other dispaly, other than odometer, you can be pretty sure you have problems as I typed above.
This is also true of the HUD which goes back to a full display with the oil can. This is, at least, true with 2000 year and back.
I don't know if it is true for later models but I am guessing it is.
