Do differnet oil weights effect the running temp of the engine? If my engine tends to run a little warm, especially in commuter traffic, is there a better weight oil to run that will keep the engine running cooler?
For the record, this is for my jeep, not the vette, it runs nice and cool all the time.
Re: Oil weight and engine temp question (jayleone)
In a sense, yes. You could be running a super thin 0W-20 in 110 degree ambient weather and see elevated engine coolant temps, but in all reality, 5W-30 or 10W-30 should both be good choices for warm weather conditions.
I have read about a coolant additive that will lower your coolant's temperature if it consistantly hovers beyond your thermostat's temp.
Inevitably, you should find the root-cause of the high-heat condition instead of applying band-aids. Make certain that if you have an electric fan, it is turning on at the right temperature. You may also want to check the thermostat for failure to open fully.
Re: Oil weight and engine temp question (jayleone)
jayleone,
make sure that the radiator core and the air conditioner condenser core are free of debri, so that the fan can draw air through the core fins at idle. You may have picked up the proverbial, "Walmart" plastic bag or something of that nature that is giving a partial restriction to the air flow.
