Thinking about doin' the same. Are there any reasons to think twice about it. I have a y2k w/Blackwing. Thanks.
Nope. Do it. I took it out of mine and I have the Blackwing also. I noticed the improvement right away. I dont get any surging. You need less throttle to get the car going, and it is alot more responsive now.. Mind you, I also have a set of Stingers on the car which are very low restriction.
Taking out the screen can cause the car to run a little lean initially because you are getting more air than the car thinks. It's not really a problem because it will learn to add more fuel than the original table calls for, and will adjust back for proper fuel/air. Mine ran 10% lean with aftermarket MAF ends and screen removed. The computer can adjust +/- 25% on a 2000, less on later models, but still enough to compensate.
After a poor showing on the dyno and the fact that my car was running real RICH I decided to yank that puppy out of there. Holy Cow. The car now screams. I will re-dyno to see the actual numbers. I saw similiar modded cars out produce me by 20 or more RWHP but their AFR's were all closer to ideal.
One of the folks we dyno'd with pulled his screen at the same time he installed his BlackWing and he collapsed it down on itself. In essence a 3 3/4 inch mesh screen became a 1 inch solid mass. That tells me the screen restricts air flow by at least 30 to 35 percent.
I've heard the screen allows only 300 CFM. Can anyone confirm?
I want to remove mine now! Can I do this myself? Any insructions? thanks in advance.
It is really easy to do. This is what I did:
- Disconnect the MAF connector wire. MAF is located just upstream of the air filter.
- Remove the entire intake assembly by disconnecting the airbridge from the throttle body. This will allow you to easily take everything apart outside the car rather than fiddling with it under the hood.
- Once you have the entire assembly out of the car, separate the MAF from the plastic airbridge.
- Once you have the MAF separated, I used an exacto-knife and cut around th perimeter of the screen. Then, using a flat blade screw driver you can pop the screen out.
BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO TOUCH THE THIN WIRES that are located inside the MAF. Also, do not let any debris fall on those wires. They are very fragile.
Brad it is very very easy.I did mine a while ago.Just got to pry it out and just be careful of the sensor.I used a very small eyeglass screwdriver to pry it out. Here is a pic of mine out of the car.If you notice mine came out in one nice piece with no loose metal fragments.
Lemme ask the obvious...... Why'd GM put this there in the first place??? I mean, you've got the air filter, right? Anyone know of a good reason to keep it there?
GaryZ06 wish I had kept mine. Any chance you could retake some pics one with a ruler showing its rough original diameter then collapse it down on itself and show that. This sort of before and after comparison will open folk’s eyes.
That screen is VERY RESTRICTIVE. Wonder why the 02 LS6 doesn't have it? Its called HP.
Anyone with a 2001 or 2002 that removed the screen and wish now they didn't? It seems this works well on 2000 and down for sure, but there have been threads that say 2001 and up cars can sometimes get light throttle surging from this mod. Please speak up now if it caused you problems!
97 - 00 MAF Housings have "ends" bolted on each side. The front end has the screen in it. You can buy Aftermarket MAF Ends, that have larger diameter and no screens, with air-foils, such as the breathless MAF ends.
Beginning in 2001 GM used the larger 6.0L Truck MAF on all C5 models with the screen.
In 2002, the engineers began really looking hard at ways to increase flow for the 02 LS6, they claim that for the first time they really looked hard at the screen from an engineering standpoint and realized that the screen was necessary in the trucks because of the long and curvy route of the pipes leading to the MAF. The screen was put in place to smooth the airflow before passing over the heated elements in the MAF housing so proper air flow measurments could be made. Since the LS6 flows more efficiently than the LS1, they looked at the way air enters on a C5 and realized that the path was short and fairly straight, and the need for the screen was'nt necessary on the LS6 MAF. In thier mind I assume they did not see a compelling need to remove it from the "lesser" breathing LS1. However the aftermarket is seeing its a good mod there also.
Since the 01+ MAF is a one piece unit, and does not have ends like 97-00, you must carve the screen out.
I took mine out of a previous ls1 I had. Didnt notice much of a difference. But I am going to get the maf ends and a maf translator this time. This way I can adjust if I run lean.
