After reading this thred this morning I decided to take it out of my 99. I have been thinking about it since I bought the car in Feb of 99. Just got back from a test drive and definately feel some SOTP differance. (CHP almost got me on my test drive)!! Good MOD and free! -- also easy.
I have an '01 Coupe..... Is there a way to remove the screen intact? Not that I'm really looking to re-install it someday, but I've been trying REAL hard not to cut/damage any of the original parts on my car.

Same here. Always want to be able to go back when I want to... doing it by myself (one reason I have stayed away from the Powerloader).

WIth the 97-00 MAFs, you can replace the ends with aftermarket ends, which give you more diameter and no screen.
On 01+ (they are one assembly) your stuck with carving it out, and the only way to go back to stock would be to buy another MAF unit.
My after market MAF had a screen in it and I took it out. Had no problems, but with the loud mouth exhaust I was running lean. So I got the translator and curred that problem.
Just a stupid question BUT what is MAF??? and where is it???
The privious owner got the whole new K&N intake installed by GM and not pretty sure about the MAF.
thanks

I removed mine on my 2001 and the car has lost the mid throttle punch (response) it once had... The WOT is nearly the same, but I don't go to WOT every time I step on the gas..... I think I might try a pace MAF
Reading all the posts on this subject, how can one not like the idea of modding the stock MAF for free.
But looking at the Granitelli MAF on the vendors page and reading the advertised info about it, "Housed in injected moulded body to reduce heat soak, state of the art electonics are built to improve ignition and injector timing both" do these features make that much of a diff over just cutting out the screen on the stock unit? Is it advertising BS?
the z06 computer and maf is designed to not use the screen. If you remove your screen and then ship your pcm off to ed or such you will have some small issues. The screen directs the air flow of course so that the maf sensor gets an accurate reading, removal can sometimes cause surging.
Some testing on camaro's showed this actually hurt some performance but obviously what is done on one car is never going to be the same on another. Of course it does restrict air flow but it also has a job to do.
My MAF is moulded as one piece to the base part of the air cleaner housing, its wierd because there is a clamp there at the bottom but it wont seperate there, anybody else have this? I dont see were the MAF comes off the housing, Thanks.
AHHH, nevermind i see were it "peels" apart the rubber was very tight around the MAF, and it looked like one piece, besides i was handling it very gently. ok im going to start the cutting procedure know.
Now imagine the same thing 20 times longer with smaller holes....
that is your Catalytic Converters... People say they are very efficient.. Yeah right. If the MAF screen is a restriction I can only imagine what the CATS do.
