I have been helping a fellow c5 owner here at work with his car. The car will not crank over most of the time, sometimes the starter engages briefly and then nothing. He has replaced the starter, we checked for 12v coming from the switch at the TDR, and it is always there when the key is in the start position. I made a ground connection to the TDR, and the engine cranked over, but would not start, probably because the BCM is not sending a ground to the TDR, and a ready to the PCM. He recently found out if he connected a battery charger and brought the battery voltage up to 13.5-14volts the car will start. Anybody have any insight to what the problem could be? The battery has also been replaced recently, I suggested cleaning of ground connections, any advice would be appreciated. Regards

Several Forum members (Bill Curlee and Evil Twin come to mind) are infinitely more knowledgeable than I, but low battery voltage may be at work here. What's the alternator putting out? (measured by DMM at battery terminals with car running?) I've also seen suggestions to measure voltage between the positive battery terminal and the battery connection on the rear of the alternator. Any reading other than zero would suggest a bad ground at the starter solenoid.

The alternator is OK, measured 14 volts with car running. Could problem be the pass key circuit, I have read that the contacts inside the switch that read the resistance on the key pallet sometimes cause this problem.

Forgot to mention that the only codes are the left and right door control modules.

Pass key would throw a code. Check the connections at the starter for burnt or loose wires. Check the bolt for the wires and make sure it is tight.

Starter has been replaced, both positive and negative cables inspected as well.

Check connections and grounds.

If it's a manual, I would replace the clutch safety switch.
