Default NEED FOR MORE POWER

I have an '01 LS1 MN6. I have a Vortex, bored out GMS MAF (5%), LAPD High flow Air Duct & Coupler, TB bypass, and am adding a 160 thermo and superchip infusion. I am also adding a FLP header/high flow cat (eliminate the pup cats), X-pipe, and Z06 exhaust.

That's it isn't it? I don't want to add cam/heads/s-charger/NOS. Bored TB's cause more harm than good, and I think roller rockers aren't worth the money.

So, that's it for bolt ons, right? I'm done? :( :cry

You could add an underdrive crank pulley. They're worth 5-10 Rw reliably on a stock motor.

I'm talking with Andy at A&A and was initially going with a lot of bolt-ons, including the Vortex, but now I'm leaning toward adding a mild cam and headers to get what I want. According to him, the dealer won't even know about the cam, it won't cause any reliability problems, and will give some good performance. It just seems that several reliable horsepower-producing mods would be better than half a dozen smaller ones which all claim to add power that never seems to show up on the dyno.

I haven't decided yet, but that's at least what I'm looking at. With the mods I have, my car barely dyno's more than stock---but then I may need a tune-up too at 25K miles.

Just a thought.

most of the things that you refer to as doing "more harm than good" are what will give you the REAL power you want. Like many things in life, great things are accomponied by some risk, sometimes the greater the risk the greater the reward, this has been my experience with performance mods, so i broke acouple valve springs in 2 cars over 4 yrs, every time I DECISIVLY spank an M5, viper, Porsch tt, ect I :D and its all worth it.

Start with a n20 system, if you need agood shop in Miami let me know :chevy

Hey Skeet, I'm from the old break egg-make omelet school too, but I just can't justify ripping apart a perfectly good engine with 8,000 miles on it.

Bolt ons can always become bolt-offs and to perform a cam change on a C5 corvette would be like passing a kidney stone. Andy is also a wildman who changes cams like I change socks, (and just recently gave me a lot of good advice).

I'm also of the belief that 380-400 hp is available with bolt on and CPU improvements. I know 450-475 is obtainable with a head/cam change-but I'm not ready for it yet. And I'm not a bottle guy.

If you want more power, then you need to make more drastic changes! Get real! bolt ons can only do so much.

I agree with all of you, but I do not want to open the engine up at this time, and want to explore the bolt on route.

Now if Andy was my next door neighbor, he might be able to convince me to a mild cam change and pulley for a few bucks-but at this point I can't see major 'vette surgery :blueangel:

I have to agree with Al unless you are at least willing to switch cams. I doubt if you will ever see major HP gains at the rear wheels with just bolt ons.

Dave, most people DON'T want to tear apart the engine. Thats why Most mods say:
"Bolt On". It's good marketing, I agree with you. "If it aint broke, Don't fix it"- I live by that saying.
I plan on Headers next. At that point, I will be close to 01 Z06 power without getting into the engine. I am sure that after a while I might want more power. Next option: Supercharger(Bolt On :D ) or Heads/Cam.

By the way, Stingers instead of Z06 exhaust will yield a few more horsepower while sounding better and costing less or about the same.

I think with the mods your making, you'll have about 340rwhp. I understand your hesitation with breaking into the motor. Enjoy the power you have and add some bigger rims/tires.

If you want a serious kick in the pants without tearing in to motor, get yourself a set of 3.90 or 4.10 gears. For about $1600 your car will feel like you just added 80 hp! Plus, it's basically a bolt on mod that isn't too difficult to take back to stock if desired. Good luck!

I totally agree. 4.10 gears are a perfect solution for you with m6 C5 which will really give you a noticable kick in the pants without touching engine internals. Many m6 guys have converted to the 4.10s and they say the combo is awesome.

If your getting your flp's from us I would be suggesting another 499 NET NET no shipping Borla Stingers Lighter and better flowing than Z06 plusou can get 800.00+ for your Z06 EXH.system check with E-Bay to make sure Im right on tthat price. It could be 1,000 or 450.00 I just cant remember this AM and dont want to mislead you.
Youll find in conjunction with FLP'S the Stingers Kick butt you could be looking at 15rrwhp addition over the Z06 system and they do sell on E-bay,you can even Let Mike or Nate quote you a trade in price and maybe get cash back.A NOVEL concept in HI-PO parts buying.
The best of luck in any decission you make.Stay in touch,Dave

I have access to an uncut Z06 catback for $550. The stingers may be a little bit lighter but a lot louder. As far as catback HP claims, I don't think there is much there for "bolt on" cars like mine.

The Z06 catback is more my speed as I want the light weight without the sound of a lobster boat. However Extreme, I do want those used Z06 swaybars we talked about...

Gears are always a nice idea, but traction can become a problem quickly. They are also are very expensive, and can have quality problems-I also enjoy my 5th gear top speed runs and economy. Personally, I would love the Z06 gearbox (with a taller 5th) but that is also expensive.

If Chevy would trashcan that !@#$ 1-4 shift, 1st gear would not need to be so tall!!
