I have an 2001 A4 with 158K and have a low decibel vibration when the car is in gear but stopped. The best way I can describe it it almost sounds like a sub woofer fluttering or a loose muffler and it is defiantly coming the rear of the car. I replaced the exhaust and installed new brackets but no help there. I suspect it has something to do with the torque tube but that is only a guess. It seems central to the rear end and I also get a click (Almost like a relay clicking) from the same area if I go from reverse to drive, any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated
I would look real hard at TORQUE TUBE coupler (Rubber Gublios) deteroriation and rubbing on the inside of the Torque tube!!
If you POWER BRAKE the car in gear, does the sound change amplitude/frequency.
Use some 3/8" vacuum hose or fuel line and make a listening device.
Get 4-5 feet of hose. Insert a small machine screw into one end and place that end on the TT housing at the rear of the tunnel.
Put the other end in your ear and see if you can pin point the noise as the car sits still in gear.
You can also remove the bolt and point the open end of the hose at a noise source and it will help you narrow in on the exact spot the noise is happening.
Let us know how you make out. Ive see too many to count bad rubber isolaters (gublios) in TT that I NEVER would have thought that they were bad. Most are crumbling and weak and FLEX enough to contact the inside of the TT. They still work but make weird noises.
Here is a cool post detailing the death and rebirth of a GUBLIO

Bill,
Thanks for the Tips and I will try those this weekend. On the scope idea are you saying to place the hose/scope up next to the torque tube and rout the other end into the car so i can put it in gear and listen? Just want to make sure I have the right idea.
Im betting its the t-tube. I was upset by this issue too. I had mine rebuilt when doing a stall converter and gears. Sure enough, the rubber 6 shooters were cracked and coming apart. If you want silence and smoothness, replace with stock rubber.
My problem now is, I did poly couplers and the sound is even worse! At least I know everything is fine, but the noise transferred trough the hard poly couplers, and a solid pfadt transmission brace is not fun! Thats what I get for making my DD, a weekend warrior. I dont mind it myself, but when someones in the car, it sounds like a total piece of $hit. Kinda embarrassing

Yes,,, That or have someone in the car while you are under the car searching for the noise. The open hose is like a search light. The bolt in the hose allows you to PIN POINT the noise to a very specific spot.
I can tell you what rocker is tapping THRU the valve cover.
