I took my 1998 6 speed 60k miles out for the first time over the weekend and was shocked to realize it is not shifting right, and I am lost. To sum it up, when accelerating after shifting into gear at any speed from any one gear to another my rpms rise up and then drop down, almost like the transmission is slipping, but I still accelerate during this rise then drop. I just purchased the car last month, after selling my auto c5. any ideas where to start
Sounds like the clutch is slipping. Drop it into 4th gear and stand on it. If its rpm's start rising at a non-liner rate is regards to your speed its slipping. Maybe need new clutch fluid also if its black. Is it a stock car?
it looks all original except exhaust and wheels. I bought the car from a chevy dealer as is from ct. I was able to contact the previous owner and talk to him, he had same issue but said it was like that for years.
If there was any kind of warranty, take it back to the dealership to report the problem. (just saw the "as-is" statement) Might still want to see if the dealership would meet you half way as a good will effort.
I hope it isn't true but it sounds like the clutch is worn and will need replacement. Especially true if the previous owner was driving it that way for some time.

Reason: Saw as-is statement
I don't think a fluid change will help, but good fluid is appropriate. I think you need a new clutch and new/refinished flywheel. What you describe is not a transmission issue. A slipping clutch would explain it though. If you change the clutch put in a new slave cylinder since you are already there to do it. Also a new crank shaft bearing.
PS: If you go into the clutch, inspect or better yet, put in new torque tube couplers.
I bought the car online from Richards chevy in ct, I knew it was going to need something because I got it cheap, and was sold to me as is. i did change the clutch fluid, but that did nothing. the more i read the more im thinking clutch
Outside of Rochester, I'm almost certain it will need a clutch, it slips in higher gears Doing the test in 4th around 2k rpms as I hit the gas the rpms rise then drop then the car accelerates normal
Now the question is what clutch do I go with, I don't plan on doing any major hp upgrades just a few small ones to go with the borla exhaust that's on there

OEM replacement LUK clutch. Remove the lower bell housing inspection cover before you replace the clutch and inspect for oil .leaking from the rear main seal, This is always a possibility with a slipping clutch.
ls7, just get the stock one the vendors on here sell. Get a new pilot bearing and rear main and slave also. May as well get a remote bleeder line while your at it also.
