I ordered a motive rebuild kit that was supposed to come with the pinion and carrier shims. Long story short they stopped providing them in their kits, and even though it was advertised to have them, they didn't come in the kit, and the vendor I orderd it from only has a couple pinion shims they are willing to give me.
Each shim from the dealer is a good $10-15, and I need about 20 of them to have the full set. I called a bunch of shops, and they all have the same problem. They are even reusing shims from old diffs because of this. Is there really noone that sells just a shim kit? This seems kind of ridiculous.
I was thinking of going ahead and dropping the $300 on all the shims from the dealer and returning all the ones I didn't use. However, I don't know if they are going to order like 20 parts for me just so I can return all of them but a few. Another option is to buy the Yukon full rebuild kit for like 180 (same price as the motive btw) that actually includes both sets of shims and just take the loss on the motive kit or try to sell it, even though nobody probably wants it because it doesn't have shims. Any suggestions? This is really delaying my project.
Rick Kim was the one guy I didn't call. I just talked to him, and he said that he looked all over the country, and could only get them from the dealer.
Looks like I'll try the dealer and see if they would be ok with me returning most of them. If I can't find a dealer that will let me return them, then I'll be better off just buying another full rebuild kit. Thanks for the reply!
Waiting on a call from the GM dealer. The parts guy has to ok it with his manager before he orders them all since I'm going to be returning most of them.
Yukon only offers them in their master rebuild kit, otherwise they are sold individually. I've talked to a few vendors with the same outcome, so we will see what the dealer says. I'll try a few other dealers if Bill fox isn't willing to do this.
Anyone have a connection with a GM dealer in the detroit metro area that might be able to give me leverage here?
I don't plan on returning the motive kit, because I have everything I need besides the shims, and I would like to get this done this weekend.
Man,,,,, I wish I could help but, I would be in the same boat. I have the tools but, lack the shims.
Rick told me about the lack of shims a LONG time ago. So did Justin Abbot at ZIP. Unless you stock the EXPENSIVE SHIM KIT, its difficult to get exactly what you need when you need it.
Can you take some pictures during your rebuild /SET UP??
Are you going to install the up-graded C6 Pinion retainer???
I'm not upgrading the retainer. I have another thread going on with my build, and I'll put a bunch of pictures in there.
Got off the phone with the dealer, and all 17 shims are about $320 after tax. They said they would charge me a 25% restocking fee for the ones I return, so it won't be too bad.
Just for everyone's information, there are 5 pinion shims and 12 carrier shims.
Here is the thread where I'll be posting the pics. You have posted in the thread already Bill, so you should be subscribed. Updating with clutch install pics soon, just need to snap one more pic.
