Just bought a 2002 targa w/83000 miles and when I get in to start it I can't get the key to turn. I wiggle, shake, push, you name it, the gear lever (auto) and it just won't go, until after about 20 trys I can finally turn it on. The ignition switch itself is a little loose in the dash so I was wondering is this normal? and has anybody else had this problem? Am I not doing something right? I have checked the manual but haven't found any help there. Any suggestion? Thanks
I did notice it when I first bought it but it wasn't that bad at first--plus I was too excited and just wanted to drive it off of the lot The dealer suggested cutting a new key so we'll see how that works first.
The ignition switch should NOT be loose. You most likely have a lock cylinder issue that needs to be addressed before it strands you.
Remove the ignition switch from the dash. The lock cylinder can be removed from the ignition switch.
Take the lock cylinder to a lock smith and he can overhaul the lock cylinder or tell you if you need a new one. The lock smith can match the new lock cylinder to your key/s
While you have the ignition switch out, use this post to overhaul the electrical portion of your ignition switch:
GOOD NEWS--I had the dealer cut me a new key from the VIN# and it was obvious how rounded off the orig key was. Works like a charm now so I can put this one issue to rest.
Thanks for the input folks--I love this forum.
Your welcome! By the way, the cost of the new key and to cut it was 31.50 + tx. A lot cheaper and less hastle than replacing the ignition switch. This was the first really nice day since I bought my vette and I LOVE IT. What a great car we're fortunate enough to enjoy.
