I'm a C3 guy asking a technical question for a buddy who owns an '04 Vette. I'm not familiar with their issues and am hoping someone here can point me in the right direction for him. I'm copying and pasting his email to me directly to give you a sense of his problem...
Well, last time I drove it, Monday night, it ran fine, Tues AM neither of the ignition keys wanted to go into the ign switch. Fiddled with it a little bit and both would go in, but then wouldn’t turn. Fiddled with the keys a little more they turned but the car wouldn’t start. Wouldn’t turn over, NADA! It’s been “****-up” since Tuesday Morning. No info such as “reduced power” comes up on the “info” center.
I asked him if he had battery power...he said yes...lights, etc. all work fine. He has no clue and he doesn't have any faith in his local dealer and has yet to find someone who calls himself a "Corvette Specialist" who can live up to the title.
It sounds to me like the contact points on the keys have worn down, but that's just a guess. If that is the case a replacement key obtained from the dealer would be the most likely fix. The same thing happened to me, and with the same symptoms, when one of my keys wore down.
