Default Head Gains

I have a stock ls1. I put a ported throttle body ,ls6 intake B&B short tubes. ls7 coils and after market air filter no tune. I bought a nice set of used #1510 AFR 205 heads. I am wondering how much HP will I gain with heads and tune I know it will be more with a cam but on a budget. It should be around 80hp if I do cam and heads. But I was just thinking heads. I LIVE IN CALI SO THE RULES HEAR SUCK!!!

If there are no! Issues with the heads you should get 35-45 rwhp
With a good tune. Conservative estimate.

It'd also be nice to know if they're shaved at all. If not, I'd think about it to raise compression. And screw the budget...you bought a Corvette; buy a cam too.

They have been shaved. The cc is 59 instead of 66

OK so I guess I am doing the cam too.So any cam #s that will work in California. Nothing to crazy, have to pass smog. I don't care about top end squeeze numbers they are just for talk,Need strong mids and torque that's where we really drive.something that pulls hard when coming out of a corner

Those are a great set of heads! Good choice! Now for the cam, check out texas speed for their 224/224r or 224/228r cam on a 114lsa. These are pretty much the max sniffer passing cam specs in Cali. I talked to Cunningham motor sports about it when I went to them, and Excelsior motor sports that I go to now. 224/228 is what they both recommend as the largest California legal cam as they have obviously done allot of work for customers that want to maintain legality. This cam is nice and easy on the valve train and only requires a nice set of .600 lift beehive springs like the comp 918's.

Long story short between the two, the 224/224r is a good one if the car will remain naturally aspired. The 228 exhaust is meant for forced induction to aid in getting the gases out fast. The 224/224 is a safer bet for emissions and will maintain better low end characteristics. I am going with the 224/228r because an a&a supercharger is a high priority for me in the future. Ive researched tons and tons about this build and from every tuner Ive talked to, these are basically the best you can do with Cali restrictions.

224/224 .581/.581

224.228 .581/.588

Both come in a variety of lsa's, but 114 is the one you want for emissions. Not sure exactly what the operating range is, but I have seen dynos of this cam make great low end increases as well as high end and bringing the rpm up into the 6500 range. (My 99 with stock cam fell off at 5300 rpm to give a reference). I know the increases are positive across the board.

totally agree with the 224/228 either 114+2 or even 115+3 for a little
More stealth.Tony Mamo developed the 224/228 came specially for the
AFR 205s when he designed these heads. PM him here on the forum
He's a great guy to work with and he did deveop the first aftermarket
Cylinder Heads for the LS1 and every cathedral head for AFR thereafter
205,225, then 210, 230, & 245s. The extra 4 on exhaust will help since
You do not have LTs. Should add another 30+rwhp and give wicked crisp
Throttle response from 2500 rpm and pull all the way to 6500 rpm!

Make sure you calc your head gasket thickness as the 59cc is not going to be real good on 91 octane in California. Your going to need a real good tune.

Best to go with the GM .051" MLS. And clean the piston tops. Timing is going to have to be real conservative with the stock cam or you will get detonation. You can't rely on the ECU helping you. It needs to see the detonation in order to apply knock retard, but by then, detonation has already happened.

Rob
Latest GM High Tech & Performance Mag (May) put AFR heads
With cam 227/230 .582 with 114 LSA on a 2003 Z06 made
444 horse and 405 torque on a Land and Sea Dyno
Stingier then a Dyno Jet I believe. A unported new Fast 92
and LS2 90 made 15 horses more than the LS6 manifold
