Hey Guys, I just got back from Maryland picked up another c5, I've owned a hand full of c5s and have dealt with all the common problems, but this has me stuck... the car is a 1998 A4, here is the issue... every time I start the car you have to hold the key over in the start position for about 10 seconds before it starts... it is not instant like every other vette I've had. Service tech at dealership is clueless. any ideas? anyone heard of this before

So your saying it turns over for 10 seconds before it starts or it does nothing for twn seconds before it starts turning the engine over?

it just pauses for about 10 secs, dose nothing, ive tried waiting with the key in the ignition, waiting with the key in acc, and just plain putting the key and turning it over...after the 10 second pause then it starts normally no codes, no issues with gauges

Not a computer or electrical guru, but do you think it could be a lazy ignition module or solenoid?

Scan it to see if there any security codes. Also check to see the PCM is getting the crank signal. It's on the pid list.

Sounds like the ignition switch contacts are corroded. Bill Curlee has a write up on this. Search his posts. I'm sure he will chime in here shortly though. Why the five keys?

If it were my car, I would jump right on the starter solenoid. They are FAMOUS for causing that exact issue.

That said,, you should check ALL the high current carrying wires. Start at the battery and clean the terminals and re-torque to the required 11 ft/lbs

The main starter lug needs to be clean and tight. Remove the wire and clean the eyelet and re-tighten.

Check the engine block negative battery cable ground point.

If you put a test light from ground to the s terminal on the starter and then attempt to crank it, that will tell you if you have a starter problem. If the light lights instantly, the ignition switch, PCM and relay are working. I agree with Bill, clean and verify all connections.
Also look around under the hood and dash for any wiring that's not O.E.. You never know what someone may have wired in there that's causing your problem - alarm - remote start.
FYI I am a 25 year master tech. I do this everyday.

Well first thing I see is there is some type of heated seat controls next to the lighter in the ash tray area, this cant be a stock or special option right. I'm going to start reading on the starter solenoid

If there is any wiring that is not stock I would disconnect it from the factory harness. Return all wiring to stock and try it. We have removed many aftermarket alarms at my shop that have been the cause of all kinds of problems! Make sure you do the tests/procedures Bill and I listed above. If u get stuck, pm me. I'll try to help u sort it out.

You might also want to have the battery load tested..
I had the same problem on an Impala, and thought it was a bad ignition relay, but it turned out a new battery fixed the problem...

checked a few things, checked for codes...none, checked battery (even know it looks to be new) battery good. same issue, have to hold hey over for about 3 to 10 seconds, and then it starts normally, no clicking no out of place noise, just a delayed start

The STARTER SOLENOID is on top of the STARTER.

The wires that you need to inspect clean and check the tightness on are at the front side of the solenoid:
