Hey Guys, I just got back from Maryland picked up another c5, I've owned a hand full of c5s and have dealt with all the common problems, but this has me stuck... the car is a 1998 A4, here is the issue... every time I start the car you have to hold the key over in the start position for about 10 seconds before it starts... it is not instant like every other vette I've had. Service tech at dealership is clueless. any ideas? anyone heard of this before
it just pauses for about 10 secs, dose nothing, ive tried waiting with the key in the ignition, waiting with the key in acc, and just plain putting the key and turning it over...after the 10 second pause then it starts normally no codes, no issues with gauges
that's what I was thinking something with computer, its odd because the car came with 5 keys, yes 5 keys all gm, all in the same condition and they don't look new. every key dose it,
Sounds like the ignition switch contacts are corroded. Bill Curlee has a write up on this. Search his posts. I'm sure he will chime in here shortly though. Why the five keys?
If you put a test light from ground to the s terminal on the starter and then attempt to crank it, that will tell you if you have a starter problem. If the light lights instantly, the ignition switch, PCM and relay are working. I agree with Bill, clean and verify all connections.
Also look around under the hood and dash for any wiring that's not O.E.. You never know what someone may have wired in there that's causing your problem - alarm - remote start.
FYI I am a 25 year master tech. I do this everyday.
Well first thing I see is there is some type of heated seat controls next to the lighter in the ash tray area, this cant be a stock or special option right. I'm going to start reading on the starter solenoid
If there is any wiring that is not stock I would disconnect it from the factory harness. Return all wiring to stock and try it. We have removed many aftermarket alarms at my shop that have been the cause of all kinds of problems! Make sure you do the tests/procedures Bill and I listed above. If u get stuck, pm me. I'll try to help u sort it out.
You might also want to have the battery load tested..
I had the same problem on an Impala, and thought it was a bad ignition relay, but it turned out a new battery fixed the problem...
checked a few things, checked for codes...none, checked battery (even know it looks to be new) battery good. same issue, have to hold hey over for about 3 to 10 seconds, and then it starts normally, no clicking no out of place noise, just a delayed start
