Default Motor Oil Questions

Guys I'm looking to get this done today, so any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I'm about ready to change my oil again and I'm thinking about using Redline. I checked out the part store near my house, and they're charging $6.25 per quart. Is that about average? That works out to $43.75 for 7 quarts, plus the price of the oil filter, plus tax. I'm willing to spend a little extra if I'm getting my money's worth, but the question is... is Redline oil worth the extra cost?

One more question. I'm also thinking about using an oil system cleaner. (you drain the old oil, run the solution to clean it out, then drain it and refill with new oil). Is it OK to use this stuff with C5 Corvettes? Mine is a 99 A4 with 3.15 rear axle.

Hi! Red Line oil, Amsoil, Royal Purple, etc. are all good synthetic oils and will do well in your car. Your question, "Is it worth it?", depends more on emotion than reason. If you race weekly and/or run literally to the "redline" on a regular basis, PERHAPS one of them would be better than Mobil 1, but you would have to run the car for years and then tear it down, etc. to ever know. However, paying more for an "exotic oil" makes us feel better. I know, I use Amsoil!!!! :jester

SeansVette,

What carpe dm said. :yesnod:

As to the question of running an oil flush....forget that....IMO. Your Vette has undoubtedly been on a synthetic oil and hopefully changed at regular intervals. I really doubt that the oil passages are gunked. Use the money to buy more oil.

Good luck.
Mark

Pennzol, Pennzoil and Pennzoil!

And, by the way - Nothing but Pennzoil. Meets GM Spec 4718-M.

by the time you read this reply you will probably have already changed your oil. i read on this forum that redline is not API or GM certified. that would definitely steer me toward amsoil or RP. i went with amsoil because it gives longer oil change intervals and i don't drive my c5 on a regular basis.

Aren't you forgetting Mobil 1?

From http://www.mobil1.com
Depending on the viscosity grade, Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ motor oils meet or exceed the requirements of all major automobile manufacturers, including General Motors GM 4718M and Daimler-Chrysler MS 9615. Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ meets or exceeds the more demanding European ACEA requirements and Japanese valvetrain wear requirements. Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ 0W-40 is also approved for Mercedes-Benz MB 229.3.

I apologize. My statement was taken out of context. I did not mean to imply that Pennzoil was the only synthetic to meet the GM spec. My statements were meant to be two distinct and separate points.

1. And nothing but Pennzoil

2. It meets GM Spec 4718-M.

I truly apologize for the confusion. Upon re-reading the sentence I can clearly see how it could have been mis-interpreted.

As for Mobil 1, it too, is a good oil, but just not my preferred choice. I started using Pennzoil back in the early 1970's when I was a young kid and always had good success with their products. I have had several cars over the last 30 years that have exceeded 200,000 miles with no signs of excessive oil burning or any major engine rebuild or valve work at the time they were sold.

I travel a lot in my business and I had a 1992 Bonneville that I sold in 1996 with more than 300,000 on the odometer. The car looked like a road warrior, but it ran great. I always changed my motor oil every 3,000 miles. IMHO it is cheap insurance.

As far as I am concerned, Pennzoil motor oil is the only one for me. That, of course, does not mean that there are not others that can do the same job, only that I have a proven track record of success with this particular brand of products, so why mess with success?

Regards -

I use Mobil 1 15-50 Performance Driving Formula "Fully Synthetic" "Race Proven" oil in my beast. The oil is changed very often!

I won't get into the oil debate. However, I would never run the engine flush in any of my cars. There is a potential for damage with it's use.

As for the oil, I run Amsoil. If you buy the older 5W-30 rather then the new Series 2000, it is only $5.75 per quart. This oil meets all the GM specs as well.

IMHO the differences between any of the top-end motor oils are virtually immeasurable. If you change your motor oil between 3-5 K miles, synthetic doesn’t start to break down till well after that; (manufactures claim after 20,000 miles). I stick with the Mobil 1 and change every 3 to 4 K.
