Default Transmission problems

Sorry I know this is going to be lengthy but please bear with me!!! Okay so I'm a new guy to this forum stuff, hope I'm doing this right! So I have a 2000 C5 coupe with 180,000 miles on it, has a 4L60E automatic transmission and of course the 5.7 liter V8 engine in it. About 4 weeks I noticed some oily dirt on the back of the car, didn't think much about being that there had been an oil spill on the roadway outside of my town, just assumed that's what it was from. Cleaned it off and went on, then 2 weeks ago there it was again!! Which at this time it was due for an oil change (great) can have that wonderful place where the fill/drain plug on transmission is to have the fluid checked. It was a quart and a half low. Then last Friday was heading to school picked the wrong time to pass a car got the gas pretty hard and the RPM's got up to about 4800 and wasn't going an faster, once got to school got on this forum to get help.?! The more I saw the more I thought yeah this going to cost. So took to well known transmission shop in Lubbock and sure enough 3-4 plate is going out. So my question is best to buy a new tranny or have them rebuild my old one? I see where a lot of y'all go with the RPM tranny so are the RPM tranny's new? SORRY SO LONG. Thanks John

John

Too many people have taken their C5 & C6 transmissions to local transmission shops only to have problem after problem and no recourse for corrective repair.

If it were me,,,,,, I would research and use one of the forum vendors who specialize in making our transmissions work correctly. Call each one that your are going to consider, discuss your goals and see what they recommend and charge.

IF,,,,,,,,, you change anything in the trans that affects shift pressures or shift timing, the PCM has to be professionally tuned to compensate for the hardware changes.

Look at what you want to do or future plan to do with the engine. More power usually means rearend ratio change and converter change and that means that you should add a transmission cooler.

Here is the list of forum sponsor vendors to look at:

Mr. Curlee,
Thank you for responding to the thread, I see that Scoggin Dickey was on the list for vendors. I live about 45 miles south of Lubbock, two months ago I took my vette in there for a radiator leak, after having it for two days said I don't have a leak. That weekend had a little time and removed some of the covering and as clear as day could see the crack on driver side of radiator. So I would be a bit worried to take my car in for the transmission. The shop I took my car was recommended by a car dealership that only sells corvettes, from 1959 to 2013 models. I'm not looking to beef up or add anything, just need it to get me back and forth to school.

Bud,, if its just a daily driver, it may be a lot less expensive to stab in a good used tranny. They are out there.

You can do a tranny swap in a good afternoon!

Something to consider. That way, you can shop a reliable shop that can build it right later down the line.

Okay I will definitely turn my search to a good used tranny. I do remember seeing a RPM LEVEL IV 4L60E automatic transmission somewhere (would have go through my history searches) that had less than 5,000 miles on. Is that a good quality and a good fit for a corvette that's not looking for more power or torque? Also it was priced for $1100.00 is that price reasonable? Thanks or your help!
