Consider the following as the foundation for future mods: LG's ($1600), GMPP or MSD wires ($60-$80), Vararam ($300), Corsa -optional and dyno tune - necessary ($4-$500). You should also check plugs. Negotiate all of the above with a good local speed shop for an all-in-one-shot to get the price down. If you go this route, make sure they throw in a base-line dyno run.
If you decide cam, heads and/or forced induction in the future you will need these basics.
What kind of power gains u receive from just the cai and exhaust?
When I ran it on a dyno after the longtubes, axle back and cai, and a tune it put down 390 rwhp and 386 ft lbs. My car is an 01 Z06 and I think the dyno was a little generous. It still pulled like a freight train though.

Did you have it on dyno with just cai and exhaust? If not did you feel power difference with just those mods.. Exhaust and cai?
I have a 2000 6-speed that I got back in 2000. I first mod was a cold air intake, Vortec Rammer. Not to say this system is better than any other, but, it made a huge difference. The car pulled harder and you could hear it sucking if the air.
My second mod was a cat back exhaust. I went with B&B PRTs. They are almost like a dual mode system. A nice rumble at idle and steady driving. When you nail the trottle they scream.
Then I installed a B&M short throw shifter, it was like a different car then.
I went on to make other mods. These are all also supporting mods for future upgrades.
I was in Germany with the military when I did these mode and they made a huge difference, no dyno, just SOTP.
If you are truly looking for mods to make more power scratch a high dollar axle back off your list. Those are pretty much sound only accessories. Find yourself a zo6 ti exhaust. It will knock a lot of weight off of your car which is great plus it is free flowing enough to support well over 500 hp. A free flowing intake of any flavor. I like my vararam and there is enough support here to show it works. Since you have an 00 a new intake manifold is a good idea, you can get one off of a 01 or higher. The 01+ LS1 and LS6 engines had a better intake that flows quite well. Don't mess with the MAF. Any long tube header system from the big names, LG, ARH, etc as well as TSP or XS Power will give you what you want. On my 00 I did Vararam, FAST, PRC 5.3L heads, TSP 228R Cam, TSP long tubes, underdrive pulley, into a zo6 ti exhaust and it dynoed at 445 rwhp and drives and sounds like a stock car. You did say it was new to you though so your first things should really be tune up parts like plugs, GM wires (you dont need anything more fancy) plugs, brake pads, fluid change etc. Then check the rear end because that year is notorious for leaking. Mine was at 40 on the clock when I got it.

Where is a good place to find the Z06 exhaust? Also is there any fabrication needed due to fact my C5 is not a Z06?
I've had Corsas and Billy Boat Bullets on my car. I liked both but the Corsas were too quiet for me at cruise and idle, they did have a nice sporty sound at WOT.
The Bullets were the perfect amount of bark for my taste. But I'm a younger guy and live in an area with no noise ordinances, so they are a perfect for for me.

I just put the PRTs on a week ago and they sound awesome. I also put the callway honker on just today

+1 My 2000 was leaking (picked it up a month ago with 93K). I had all the fluids changed out, had the repairs made. I already have new pads and rotors, and plugs and wires ready to install when I get some time.
