Default Window problem solved- Not regulator though, connectors!

ok i read all the posts did some tinkering, gave it whack with the hammer it started working, yatta yatta...

then it wouldnt work, and rarely would hitting the door panel help.

I bought another regulator and i noticed that it wouldnt work. I gave it a little tap and it was fine. buttoned up the car, worked for about 10 minutes of testing and then it stopped working, no amount of hammer persuasion helped.

Multimeter comes out, test power connector and get power.

all of a sudden window works.

then it stops. no more continuity.

i bump into door power control unit box and the multimeter reads continuity. WHAT!?

i wiggle around the connectors and continuity comes and goes.

I narrow it down to the bottom two connectors green and black.

Keep in mind it seemed like i had all the symptoms of the dying window regulator.

i pull apart bottom connectors clean them with some sand paper, made sure they werent bent and notice the receiver prongs on the connector harness, being female, werent really tight.
By that I mean there was excess room for the male end to wiggle around without making contact with the side walls of the female side hence needing to wiggle the harness to get continuity. PS I HATE MS PAINT

I have pictures of another similar harness for examples.

Looking straight on it seems we want there to be little room for the prong to move around. This connector is pretty good.

So i took the little blue plastic retaining clip out of the back of the connector and had a look.

I wanted to get the wires out but couldnt manage without doing damage so i stuck a small pick in the back and wiggled it around bending and enlarging the metal receiving connector to take up more space in the slot to create a tighter connection.

i put it back together and tested for continuity. Bingo! i wiggled it around aggressively and still great continuity.

just to be sure i electrical taped it in place once the connectors were plugged back in to be sure they couldnt wiggle loose.

Window seems to be working fine and now i have an extra window regulator for when the piece of crap gives up on me.

anyways, big triumph for me as there wasnt much on the web about this so i had to work it solo and wanted to pass along my experience.

Thanks so much for the summary. I'm having issues with the all of the controls on my drive door. No windows, locks, mirrors all appear dead. Then they work, sounds like a ground but don't know where they are grounded. May be opening up a post here.

Wow.. Timely! I just replaced my motor/regulator and it STILL did not work. Came here looking for solutions and after reading this... Figured out what the problem was! Same issue. Wish I tried this before buying a new assembly and taking the time to install it, but live and learn I suppose. Thanks!

had the same problem a year ago and was about to tear the panel off. Bill Curlee said to wiggle the harness where it goes into the door and see if the connectors were not making constant contact. I tried it and the problem went away and has not returned. I will have to clean the contacts sooner or later, but was sure glad it was something so simple. As always, Bill is a wealth of knowledge.
