It's not actually a problem with losing balance. These dampers are demonstrating a habit of coming apart, where the rubber between the inner and outer rings is becoming "unglued" allowing the outer ring to "walk" either forward or backward. If it walks forward, it eats into the steering rack....backward, it eats the timing cover.
Ok but what is the % this occurs with owners of a C5 Z06 and at what typical mileage?

I wish the entire car was metric. It sure would make things easier.

To be honest, I'm okay with that, considering the kind of performance you were getting 15 years ago for under $40K.

That's how I usually explain it, that's why I'm worried about the prettier interior on the C7, what did they trade! I kind of like my "cheap" interior.
I think for 52k brand new in 02 this car was and still is the best designed street/race car ever designed. I still race my car at hpde's and am amazed at how well it performs on track with only a shock change due to wear as far as suspension.( now have 04 shocks) It sill turns heads on the street and I am glad the designers stayed the course in their intent. I like my "cheap" interior, I bought a Z06 Corvette, not an Esclade. To the people who complaign about the oil drain plug location, or it being metrix, shut up and just change your oil already.

You know what is really funny about the interior? When my wife and I picked up the car, seeing for the first time in person, we were very impressed with the interior. All of the buttons have rubber style covering, the dash looks of good quality and the seats are too. I guess stepping up from a $25k 1997 Mustang Cobra interior made the Z's look awesome.
BTW...how did my thread become about interior anyway?!?

Must be an okie boy thing. I felt the same way, I thought it was light years above the quality of my '85's interior and nicer than a lot of the vehicles I've owned. That being said I've been for a ride in a few Mercedes and BMW's and can see some of the cosmetic touches that people really like and understand that too.

Yeah my best friend just traded his 2002 911 Turbo in on a brand new Mercedes CLS550 with the upgraded leather interior. I believe the final cost was $87k. Now that interior is a few steps up! Too bad the car will only be worth $50k in three years. The Mercedes cars do NOT retain their value very well at all.

Yeah, my Stepmother has a bad habit of buying "old" Mercedes for cheap. They're frequently very plush basketcases. I get why people say the Corvette interior is "cheap" but I think people are comparing it to other cars at the same price point that sacrifice the performance for the plushness.

I don't know guys. I went from a '96 Acura Integra to my '02 Coupe, and it pains me to say that Integra's interior was a mile ahead of the C5's. Everything from the radio/HVAC bezel popping loose to the huge gap between the door and dash panel to the seat hardware cutting through its own foam and leather ... I could go on all day. They used decent materials, but the components just don't seem to be designed and assembled with much attention to detail. And honestly that's baffling to me because if you look at the other GM vehicles of that vintage, most of them are better than the C5 in that respect. My wife's '04 Grand Prix has a much better interior than my C5. Yes, I understand they were more focused on the performance of a Corvette v/s a grocery getter, but does not using a ruler really save you that much money?

Ruler LOL... we haven't used rulers in 15 years. The design are computer measured, they are also designed to control stacked tolerances. Meaning that variation in manufacturing will all still fit the application. Tighter tolerances mean more cost to manufacture. Its not as simple as pointing your fingers at people with rulers.
