Ok sorry for the newb question but here it is...don't laugh. I have had the car up on jackstands only once to flush the brakes and install steel braided lines. I knew it was due for an oil change so I took a look around. Am I correct in assuming the drain plug is the nut facing forward and down at an angle about a foot forward of the oil filter?
I wouldn't say that. It's just something to keep in mind before you slide under there with your socket set. There's no shortage of fasteners on any car that can't be accessed with a socket. It's just slightly unusual for one of those to be the drain plug.
Really, I use a box wrench on all my vehicles, what's the big deal?

Yeah just the fact that something which should be so accessible several times a year can't take a socket wrench seems like poor design to me.

I know what you're saying, but look at the design a little further, and you'll see the amount of disassembly required to change the harmonic balancer, which time has shown to be a "limited lifetime" part....

How many miles before they typically get out of balance?

It's not actually a problem with losing balance. These dampers are demonstrating a habit of coming apart, where the rubber between the inner and outer rings is becoming "unglued" allowing the outer ring to "walk" either forward or backward. If it walks forward, it eats into the steering rack....backward, it eats the timing cover.
The design of this car sucks ! A bunch of mindless idiots, who only made these things just to **** people off. I can not imagine why anyone would buy one of these cars.

That's why I offer a courtesy disposal service, anyone who does not want to deal with a Corvette anymore is welcome to deliver it to me for disposal.
