Putting dual springs on my '03 Z. I have the spring off and have removed the GM style guide seal. I have a comp cams kit that came with new seals. I see that there are two styles. Intake and Exhaust. My question is, how far down do I install the new seals? There is not a nice base to seat into the head like the GM seals. Do I just lube them and slide them over the valve by hand as far as they go and that's it?
no then you have to tap them with a 12mm deep socket and rubber mallet. they do not sit all the way down. there will be maybe a 1mm or so gap.the seal i got were all the same but there are two types of seal i ordered two pairs one was longer then the other one. i opt'd to go with the longer one's for both intake and exhaust.
Not sure how they compare to the stock GM older style seals on the earlier LS1. In the service manual, there is an installation tool for this. Some use a socket to tap them down, however some have also destroyed the seal using this method. Also, the service manual stipulates a measurement after installation to ensure they are seated. Not sure this measurement can be used with your seals since their physical size could differ from the GM seal.
Any way, when you tap them down you will hear an audible change when they bottom.

If there are no instructions with the kit on how to install the new guide seals, I'd call Comp Cams and get directions from them before installing, just to be safe.
Just FYI. The 12mm socket worked perfect. I just gave them light taps until they bottom. The key was listening for the audible difference to tell if the seal had bottomed.
