Default $#!*&$ -- Vortex question -- carbon fiber vs. clear box

I have the carbon fiber box on my Vortex, and I arranged with another Forum member to swap just boxes, his clear for my carbon fiber. My plan was to paint the clear box to match my rail covers (see sig). So, I do all the paint work and go to hook things back up, only to learn that the large hole through which the filter neck passes is smaller on the clear box.

On my carbon fiber set up, the neck of the filter passes to the outside of the box and the large hose clamp fastens around the neck/MAF end outside of the box. However, because the hole on the clear (now painted) box is too small, the only way I could get it to work would be to put the MAF through the box and use the hose clamp on the inside. Of course, if I do it this way, my shroud hole is in the wrong place. :mad :mad I have a sick feeling that this is the way the clear box is supposed to work, that is, that the MAF goes into the box???

Does anyone know if the clear box uses a different filter (i.e., with a smaller neck)?? Or can anyone comment on how their clear box filter is attached.

Thanks for reducing my total frustration!!! :cuss :nopity

I hooked my vortex, clear, back up today and the filter passes thru the top to connect to MAF on the oustide.....I did however, have to push up on the filter and "pop" it thru the opening, it was a little snug

There are different models of the Vortex. I'm pretty sure the one for 2001 is bigger, as it has a different part number. Call Breathless and ask.

Thanks guys for the responses. Mean -- this one is more than snug; believe me, out of desperation, I tried to force that pup through. So, I fear that Bob has hit the nail on the head, and I unknowingly traded for an earlier version. :cuss Well, I'll be calling Breathless tomorrow. Thanks again. :seeya

There is a larger hole in the 01/02/03 boxes than the 97-00 boxes had becasue of the MAF/Filter size. What year car are you switching with?

Maybe the person you traded with would trade back if you pay the shipping? His cover is going to be too big if yours is to small, right?

I had trouble getting the filter through the hole on my clear box as well. If you lay the filter in the box sideways and then turn it while compressing and sliding the flexible end through the hole, you should get it in. That was what worked best for me.

basically what many have said. You swapped out a 01+ Vortex box for a 97-00 Vortex Box.

Yes, I have now confirmed that I swapped with a pre-2001 car. Thanks everyone for their insight.

I might be able to cut a larger hole in the clear box to accommodate my filter, if all else is the same? But, as pointed out above, that will leave the other fellow with a system that is too large. He, in a very nice gesture , has suggested that he still might be able to make some type of adapter to use the '01 system on his pre-'01 car. In the meantime, I'll call Breathless tomorrow to see if they'll sell me just a pre '01 clear box top (I didn't paint the bottom).

Thanks again for the help of all. What a great Forum!
