Default Transmission or shifter issue help!!!

Hey guys last night on my drive home, i went to put my recently rebuilt T56 with stock shifter into second gear and it just would not go in! It felt like something was blocking it from going into gear completely, but does engage. Tonight I took it for a test ride and as i shifted to neutral the shifter went completely limp. I managed to somehow get it into 4th gear and now it is stuck in that gear! I included a video, maybe you guys can help me diagnose wether it is a trans issue or something with the shifter or linkage? Thanks, I really hope it is something simple because this is my DD basically.

I would check the shifter.

More than likely, not a big deal.

Are you capable& have the tools to remove the parts, to get to the shifter box & shifter?

This is the proceedure to get to where the shifter & shifter box lives

Pull the console and check the shift box linkages, I would say that is the most likely culprit. It is quick and easy to check...that would be the first thing I check.

The clamp that connects the shifter to the rod that goes back to the tranny may have come loose. If it does, your shifting action will be "hit and miss" at best....

I'm getting a whole lot of no action, just afraid it could be something with the transmission as the warranty is only good for another 6 months on it. If it came loose, I wouldn't have to get under the car would I? I read the write up mentioned above, and it almost appears you can do it without removing the whole console (Which I've done before a few times)?

No, you do not have to get under the car to check the shifter for loose bolts, broken parts or shifter alignment.

Pull the console and black rubber dust cover. Check to make sure the actual shifter is firmly bolted down and didn't work its way loose. If all is well move the stick around and see if the clamp that attaches to the little rod that comes out of the back of the shifter box. My guess that is what came loose. Then follow the procedure for aligning the shifter box and tighten everything back up and you should be good to go.

Well that would almost guarantee it's the trans.

You really need to get a beater to drive back & forth to work.

Get your self some tools & the 3 volume service manual set.

Become aquainted with the various issues with these cars & how to service your car.

If you take it to a shop that
won't back up their work..... you are going to be broke for the cost of repairs & maintenance.

I don't think so,
I'd say shifter.... just by the way his shifter flops around in the neutral position.

I think it's actually stuck in 3rd gear? Hmm i havent gone above 40 mph but I know 3rd gear would top out at 73 mph if that was the case. Weird thing is it still feels connected but it's certainly stuck in gear.

This is bs the place (AAMCO) unfortunately who rebuilt the trans said they would not cover any of this under the warranty and it's been less then 6 months. I complained of the shifter alignment not beings right to begin with, and they blamed it on my "worn" stock shifter. Now finally this.... Fingers crossed it's not the transmission. Would the linkage being messed up cause it feel like it's not going into second gear all the way though is my question which is the only doubt in my mind about it being a trans issue.

If the alignment was not adjusted properly yes. I'm telling you that looks like an issue between the shifter and the trans aka the linkages. Take 15 minutes and pull the console and find out what's going on. You can post here till your blue in the face and all this speculation means nothing, you need to start narrowing it down and inspecting the linkages and shifter box is where you need to start.

You HAVE to stop thinking the worst, and begin with the easy to check, quite possibly the cause, items. Check the shifter...if it's out of adjustment, or loose on the shift rod, it's A) easy to fix; and B) a zero cost repair.

Well I just took it apart where you remove the rubber "door" to where the shifter box and linkage is. Everything seems connected in there, but something just isnt right.

Here's another video, the problem doesn't seem to be up front... Where do I go from here? Here's a video of what the linkage is doing with the shifter completely removed.
