What does LS1 actually stand for?

What does LS1 actually stand for?
And for that matter LS6 and LT1? Someone asked me this yesterday while looking at the car and I had no good answer.

I've been told, they mean nothing outside GM internal. They are simply RPO designators, and are arbitrary like a part number.

LS could stand for longer stroke because the LS big blocks were longer stroke 427s and the LS-1/6 are a longer stroke 350s JMHO :chevy

Some of the codes have historical significance, like "LT1". Like others have said, they don't mean anything by themselves, but when taken in historical context, they mean something to car buffs because of the past reputation. I'm sure GM marketing takes that into account when they reuse old codes.
