I had a problem with my steering column sensor that caused the cruise control to kick off. Had it replaced at a GM dealer for $160 parts and labor. There's a trouble code for this so check your DIC. Good luck...J. R.
If you don't have any DIC MESSAGES or DTC CODES,, it could be your BRAKE PEDDLE or CLUTCH PEDDLE micro-switch adjustment. If one or both of them are not adjusted correctly, the PCM thinks you pressed the brake or clutch and disengages the cruise.
If the EBTCM throws a code, it will do the same thing. Check your DTCs before you turn the ignition switch OFF
Try holding the pedals up with your left foot and see if it quits doing it. My clutch switch is iffy and it causes the cruise to kick off. Typically bad in the spring and goes away after being driven a week or two. I ordered a new switch to fix it right but haven't picked it up yet.
thanks, Yes I get codes 1287 &1288, indicating traction control needing service. I wonder if they are related?
Bill is by far the expert on this. I would listen to him. That said... I was having the same problem and finally caught the active handelng active message flicker on the DIC when it disengaged. I quick check of the codes and I had the same 1287 and 1288. Those are both related to the steering position sensor as J.R. mentioned.
JR, my cruise control problem was the same as yours. My Chevy dealer replaced the steering wheel position sensor clip. It cost me the large sum of $69.83. Problem solved

The Traction Control (TC) could be the source of your problems. If you suddenly turn the car at speed, as if you are trying to miss something in your path, the cruise control will automatically turn itself off.
I would go back to the freeway and turn the TC off and then engage the Cruise control. If it doesn't turn off, then you have a new direction to go with your investigation of the problem.
I too had the 1287/1288 codes as my cruise control dropped out. I was in the middle of a long drive and just got around a semi on the interstate when it dropped out. Took me a couple seconds to determine what was going on and the semi probably thought he was going to eat some "vert" for lunch that day. I am having the SWPS replaced at a dealership. The cost I have been quoted to replace it at one is $569.00. I would do it myself because there are some great helpful posts on here on how to do it, but I am a little leary of the airbag issue. I will shop around at other dealerships around here and see what their cost is before I pay that much. If I turn off the Active Handling System the cruise control works just fine. -Glenn

Not trying to call you out, Bill, but my car would do exactly as the OP described for many months (years?) without ever throwing a code. Then one day not too long ago it finally threw a code about the SWPS. After I replaced it, everything was happy again.
And one easy test to eliminate the brake/clutch pedal switches is simply to disengage AH/TC. If it stays in cruise after turning that off, then those switches prob. aren't to blame.

You don't directly mess with the airbag to replace the SWPS. Just disconnect the battery, have a beer, then unhook everything. It's not a particularly difficult repair, but it helps if you're a bit of a contortionist. It took me ~4 hours start to finish having never done it before. But at least an hour of that was trying to figure out how to pull it out with the telescoping mech. still attached then ultimately giving up and unbolting it.
