I have always had bad reception in my 98 vette, and I just replaced the entire bose system last weekend with alpine components. It's a way better system, but I'm still getting bad reception on th radio. I know its the antena, because if I wiggle the connection on the windshield it changes. Should I use tinfoil!? Anyone know if this canbe fixed?
Hope you get an answer. Reception is no good on my 2002. Like "Nassy", I live in Chicago area (all my life) and have never really had radio reception issues until this vehicle.
I have not used this device on my C-5, but I have installed it in other vehicles that did not want a hole cut for a mast antenna. It is made by metra, I believe the model number is 44ua20($39.95). It is a hideaway powered antenna. Connection behind the radio will require an antenna adapter (40gm10($12.95)) and tap into 12V. The other end is a black box with adhesive that you stick somewhere not seen. I would usually install them in passenger kick panel. But you could even stick it in the battery compartment. They worked real well for me on getting the local stations. But this is the only device I have ever found that has worked. The FM boosters would just boost the noise not the signal. And the wire antenna from Radio Shack is just crap. You should be able to get this equipment from any local car stereo shop. The custom ones will most likely have it in stock.
The basic dilemma is with the in-glass antenna system. In simple terms, they're lousy. Diversity tuning, as we have, helps a little, but does NOT make up for a real mast antenna. If you want to install an aftermarket mast you can fix this but you will compromise the looks of the car to some extent. The whole in-glass antenna thing is a profound compromise, and has never worked well, on any car (see Audi in the '80s etc.).
For my part, I've given up on broadcast radio and have installed an XM satellite system. All the music I want to hear, with no atmospherics nor poor reception, and with a hidden antenna to boot (see threads in audio section).
