This past Friday I drove my car to work. It was record breaking temps in the 90's. Car was running warm, that's not the problem. It was running in the 230+ range in slow traffic but cooled down as soon as I got up to speed again. So that wasn't my concern. I started smelling the coolant so I thought maybe I sprung a leak. There were no drips on the ground, no loss of coolant, and the engine compartment is dry. The only concern is the lower hose seems slightly wet and sticky on one side but there are no obvious leaks. I don't see any place where the coolant came from. Anyone with ideas or similar experiences? I'm thinking it may be time to replace the hoses even though I've had no other problems. Are the silicone hoses more durable and worth the money over the rubber hoses? Any feedback appreciated. I just hate working with coolant, sticky and smelly when it spills:-)
ever since i got my C5 eight years ago, after driving it and putting it in the garage i could smell the coolant, it was venting from around the surge tank. i replaced the cap once but could never find out why it does it . never added fluid to system. system always stayed pressurized.
Water pump seal or the surge connection nipple has deteriorated internally and cracked like they all seem to do.
Where is the surge connection nipple that you mentioned? When I looked closer today there was no obvious location that is leaking, but there is a thin film around many components in the pump/thermostat area. I cleaned everything as well as possible so I can keep tabs on it and see if I can tell where it is coming from.
