Hello all, I have searched and read a lot of the post about the column lock bypass issue some/a lot of folks of had and want to make sure I don't have the problem. I just picked up my automatic 03 "vert" a week ago and drove it 2500 miles home with no issues at all. Since reading about this issue I don't want to get stranded like some have. After my research, I believe on the LMC5 module. Just prior to ordering one I read this on their website:
"The manufacturer recalls apply to the following C5 Corvettes:
1997-2004 with a manual transmission (ALL 6 speed C5 Corvettes)
1997-2000 with an automatic transmission
2001-2004 European export Corvettes with an automatic transmission
It’s hard to find anyone knowledgeable enough to reliably and inexpensively prevent or fix the column lock failure. With all of the confusion about the steering column lock failure, the multiple recalls, attempted fixes, K Harness, various modifications and bypass devices, wouldn’t it be great to have one simple, universal module that:
Can be installed in every 1997-2004 Corvette
Will prevent the column lock problem from occurring, and fix it if it has already failed
Can be easily installed in minutes without removing or modifying ANY of those other attempted fixes or devices."
Since my car does not fit into the above mentioned recalls (being an automatic), do I need to be concerned or not?
There is a universal fix for affected vehicles. A bunch of vendors sell a column lock bypass. If your car is not on the list, i.e. is a non-euro 01+ automatic you don't have the issue. My '03 auto is not subject to the recall and it has been flawless.
Thanks Chaase, I guess I may not need to get the bypass (don't believe my car is a "euro"). Looks like I might be trying to prevent a problem that I will not have anyway. Must be from my Boy Scout days...
