Hey guys my c5 likes to randomly not start.. I pulled the codes and the one that stands out after researching everything is P1631 H.. I dont have key fobs for my car so i was thinkin it had to do with unlocking it and locking it sometimes.. but it happens so random that its hard to tell
What should my next move be? Ive got a new key made and still the same thing.. Someone help me out please
Key is not being read correctly. If you have replaced the key then the problem likely lies with the sensing wire in the lock cylinder. These get a layer of oxidation on them over the years or get damaged by key insertion.
You can try the following to clean the wire and it may work:
Get a small aerosol container of electrical contact cleaner. (For certain Radio Shack will have this but many parts stores have it also. Spray some into the lock cylinder and then insert and remove the key a dozen or so times wiping the key off with a clean lint free cloth. Repeat if necessary.
If this doesn't clean the sensing wire that contacts the resistor pellet on the key to read it, then your choices are two:
1) Replace the ignition cyclinder.
2) Bypass VATS.
I personally would do #1 if the cleaning fails to correct the problem.
how would I bypass the VATS... Ive tryed cleaning it in the pass with no luck... If i replace the ignition cyclinder will i need to change keys also?
YES, car can now easily be stolen with a screw driver. With VATS, the car cannot be started unless the resistence value of what is in the cylinder matches what is stored in the BCM and PCM. (As you are well aware. )
Good thing I live in idaho lol I think i will try and bypass it
I've read recent posts where members have found them online for about $70. I think that Amazon may have them available but don't remember for certain if that was where they were found.
I would check with them. That's a 2005 post.... Same deal MAY NOT still be available.
I would also check out the ignition switch. The diagnosis is easy if you have and can use a Digital Multi Meter (DMM). Certainly I'd do the diagnosis before I spent any money on parts..... JMHO.
alright man thanks for the advice and info! your a big help
