I have a friend who has an 97 c5 and last night while he was in the foodlion parking lot his info board told him the the service steering column locked. what is this and how do you fix it.
The C5 has an electronically controlled actuator pin that locks the column when the ignition is turned off. Other cars use a mechanical method when the key of turned off. Sometimes the actuator sticks when the key is turned on.
Have him try shaking the steering wheel back and forth while turning the key on and off. Sometimes just letting the car cool off and trying again works. Something about using the A/C help cool things off too. Like said above do a search for other possible fixes.
There is also an aftermarket column lock bypass kit available to bypass this alltogether. Its preventative, and will not fix one that is allready locked.
Otherwise , it will need to be flat bed towed to the dealer.
