I have a new 2002 convertible, 6 speed. My oil runs hotter than the water. In traffic it gets up to 212-220 degrees. The water temp is about 192 to 210. Is this normal? I have only 600 miles so far.
Yes Billy, those temperatures are completely normal for "normal" driving. If you go up a prolonged hill you should see those temperatures go up, and if you go down a prolonged hill you should see those temperatures go down. Happy motoring.
Sounds normal to me; the oil will (or should) always run warmer that the coolant. I'm always happy to see my oil go over 212 for awhile, because then I know I am boiling off any condensation that may have entered the crankcase. :yesnod: :)
Thanks to you all. I am a little "careful".
As you can see by my sig I have a 1967 327. Within 24 hours of getting the new Corvette, the 1967 overheated and blew. I still need to pull the engine to determine the damage. It was so fast, I could not get off the highway. I saw the temp climbing, tried to find a safe place, and within 3 miles, rods were knocking. So now you understand my concern............
Billy
PS I think she was jealous and wanted attention! :yesnod:
If you ever take your car to the track, 280 degrees for the oil is fairly typical and no cause for concern. So you can see that oil in the 210 degree range is pretty tame and as others have told you, quite normal for street driving.
