'04 Z Differential Issues
I've got a fairly loud whine coming from (I think) the differential.
I changed out the differential oil, and there were definitely metal flakes present.
After the fluid change, the whine is somewhat diminished, but still present.
I'm hoping you folks can help me answer the following questions;
How imminent are serious problems here? It's my DD, and I'm not too keen on getting stranded, but if it's not going to be an immediate problem I'd like to wait on the repair for a few months.
Is is likely just a new ring & pinion are needed, or am I looking at a full rebuild/replacement?
What are my various rebuild/replace/repair options?
Many thanks for your time.

There pretty bullet proof UNLESS you get wheel hop and dont get off the gas. If you allow it to wheel hop, it will break an output shaft OR bust the case in half,
Here are a couple of post for you to look at They explain a LOT:

all i can say on whine is this
mild whine is more annoying that a potential for being stranded. i've had a jeep cherokee that's whined since i bought it at auction and it's been somewhere near 50k miles i've put on this beater. still whiney, still going strong
you may try 75-140 gear oil to see if it quiets down at all. would be a low cost way to test before replacement. just make sure you use a gear oil with the correct additive. i normally use redline 75-90 but they do make 75-140 both with the correct additive for our LSDs
just don't buy the one that says no additive or NS

Thus the recommendations from other members in regards to the
differential not the tranny.
