Hi all,
I've owned my '97 C5 since '98 and have had this issue on occasion recently. I live in Vegas and when it's super-hot and I drive the Vette, I get a fuel smell in my garage after parking it, like it's letting off vapors. Anyone else experience this or know what it stems from, if it is a problem?? I've had a friend's shop check the fuel sys for visible leaks n such, but nothing appears wrong. Thanks for any help.
97030: CAMPAIGN:FUEL TANK SENDING UNIT/PUMP SEAL LEAK - (Aug 19, 1997)
DEFECT INVOLVED
General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1997 Chevrolet Corvette model vehicles. Some of these vehicles have a torn seal between the fuel tank and sending unit/pump. This may cause a fuel odor and/or leakage at the attachment location.
VEHICLES INVOLVED
Involved are all 1997 Chevrolet Corvette model vehicles built within the following VIN breakpoints:
PLANT YEAR MODEL PLANT CODE FROM THROUGH 1997 Corvette Bowling Green "5" V5100001 V5104113
What Will Be Done: to prevent the possibility of a fuel odor/leakage condition from a torn seal, your dealer will replace the left and right hand fuel tank assemblies (including fuel sending unit and pump).

Jack it up, remove L/R wheel, remove inner wheel-house, inspect filler neck hose clamp(s). Tighten as needed.
Btw, if you actually DO have a leaking gasket as per the GM TSB in 69's post, you do NOT have to replace the entire fuel pump/sending unit. Those gaskets are available separately for replacement if needed. Just be sure to buy the correct gasket for your year model. Note: right and left sides use the same gasket.
Hello, just a quick comment, can you please pull your car’s codes and post them to this thread?
I just want to see if there are codes for the EVAP system.

Possible leaking fuel filter. I had to replace mine. No visable leaks but a strong fuel smell by the rear drivers side wheel.
I had the same situation on my '01, and my problem was a leaking seal on the outbound side of the fuel filter also. It doesn't readily show up, because the fuel drips on to a hot exhaust pipe and evaporates off.
Yes, I know it sounds insane, but that's what happens....as long as you catch the problem in time!!
