I purchased my first c5 a few months back and I have enjoyed the car a lot. I have only put about 500 miles on it since I purchased it as I am working on a of the corvette bugs. Replaced the headlight motors, working on the A/C blowing out alll vents and the main one is this engine noise. The car currently has 140,000 miles and it is an auto. I know it is not any of the pullies as I removed the belts and started and the noise was still there. As best I can tell it is coming from the rear of the motor. I had the car in the air and still could not figure what it is. Here is a short video of the noise.
also try to listen and feel the torque tube bearings I had this due to track bite slip at the track...
Also use a plastic coke bottle cut off and remove the cooler top hose when you refill or change the trans oil and over fill slightly then run hot and just drain extra volume off at drain plug... easy safer and clean... works for me.
good luck

Anytime the clutch is engaged, the torque is spinning. When you press the clutch, it normally does not spin. There have been issues where the clutch isn't fully releasing and or the pilot bearing has some drag and causes the TT to spin if the trans in not in gear.
IF,, you put the car in any gear with the clutch fully depressed, the TT will not be moving unless the vehicle is moving.
not sure how you can isolate a noise by walking around it that fast, i could bearly hear anything but idle up.
use stethoscope, check fluid as Bill C said, try to pinpoint the area your hearing the noise in, either from top or underneath record that then post. Do you hear it behind front tires, in gear? Does it louder in gear?
whens the last time all fluids are changed out, brake, rear end, power steering, tranny, coolant? I dont mean empty the reservoirs, i mean a flush till new fluid is seen?
Bill, Its an auto, always spinning TT

Reason: adding
Ah, hell....
You have an automatic. The Torque Tube is ALWAYS spinning! Its connected to a flex plate that is bolted to the crankshaft. That connects to the torque and converter which is connected to the input shaft of the A4 which turns the A4 OIL PUMP. Anytime the engine is running its spinning and the pump is pumping oil..

do this... jack the car up then secure it on stands, go under and remove the rubber and or inspection plates on the drive train and be sure what you looking at and where.
No starting yet and make sure you can get your hand or scope on the straight section of the TT just before the bell housing front and rear.
leave the oil check till you sure its not the TT then it should be at heat and get on with the level check and condition of oil... smell colour and particals to look for.
Mine the hot exhaust and oil BBQ or welding gloves and long sleeves are nice to have with eye protection a must due to hot sand and **** falling down the whole time while running....
Good luck
