Default 2003 Z06 starter issue

Starter occasionally (but becoming more frequently) clicks but doesn't turn over. 2-3 tries will typically get a start. Starter cranks fine when it does. No messages or codes. I have the column-lock bypass installed.

New starter, or something else to look at? OEM or aftermarket? Easy home job for an experienced mechanic?

THANKS!

First thing: check positive battery cable for tightness on the starter solenoid. Be sure to disconnect the positive battery terminal first of course.

If you do replace starter, get the truck version that uses two long bolts for mounting, not the OEM (1 short/1 long) style you have now.

They bolt right in with no modifications required. Some that come to mind right off is the Bosch SR8581N or Remy 96222 or Delco 323-1622 (reman) The Bosch and Remy part numbers are new. The Bosch comes with the extra long bolt for mounting.

HTH

BTW, I see the Bosch on Amazon for under 120.00

Also check the connection on the solenoid. Could be dirty. loose and or both.

My car did the same thing; I kept replacing batteries. Duh. I put heat wrap on the new starter.

Thanks for all the tips - I'll get under and check all the connections.

I don't think it's heat soak related - happened both at cold starts and often doesn't on a hot start.

I have to admit I had visions of a $600+ starter with a complex install process

If you got the skilz and the tools, it's not really too difficult. A lot will depend on whether you have stock exhaust manifolds or headers. Headers make the job more time consumming, but not really more difficult.

Let us know how things work out.

Sounds like a bad solenoid to me.

I believe the commutator on the starter motor doesn't always wear perfectly round. If the brushes end up on a "flat" spot, the starter needs to get bumped by the solenoid a couple of times until it finds contact.

I do quite a bit of repairs on C5 and ALL of the starter related issues that I have see fail (NO START) have been bad.corroded/burnt /loose connections on the solenoid OR a defective Solenoid.

I'm sure that the starter rotors and stators do fail but, unless its a very high mileage part or been exposed to water (submerged) I have not seen them.

In fact,, the starters that I have disassembled, I was impressed with how much wear that I didn't see. They are well made.

I agree with Bill. they are well made. My car has 127,000 miles on it and it cranks faster than my wife's g8gt.
