I'm debating on doing rear gears since I'm mostly drag racing anyway. What are some exxperiences or gains some of you had or know from switching gears? Which is better 4.10 or 3.90? How much E/T and mph will I gain?
This is with a mild heads and cam setup making 430rwhp 390 rwtq.
Thanks.
I have a stock engine but STS TT at 6lbs. I had 3:42's and went to 4:10's recently. I don't drag race so I can't help you with that just my impression. 4:10's are crazy. Whole different car and now I have to get used to it all over again. Might have to run drag radials because it is so completely traction impaired.

We have an '04 coupe and when we did the gear change (went with a 3.90) we also put a Yank SS4000 in too. The engine was stock (didn't even have headers) and we picked up a full second in the 1/4 changing from the 3.42. So basically gears and converter was worth a second for us.
If I had to do it again I'd go with 4.10s. If you primarily drag race you may want to do the same.
From what I've seen in the past, most guys with C5Z06's go with the 3.90's while Base C5's will go with 4.10's due to the differences in transmissions between the base and Z06 models. However if your car is being used primarily as a drag car than I would think the 4.10's are what you will be happier with.
What size tires? What mods/trans? What shift point?
Figure out what MPH you plan on trapping after all mods and make sure you won't hit the limiter or have to shift into OD.

Nice gains! But, I would attribute most of those gains from the converter. At least 7 tenths or so.
4.10s is what i'm leaning towards right now. I do some roll racing, but would like to be as fast as I can be in the 1/4 mile too. I would say 1/4 mile is my primary use and roll racing secondary.

Well, the whole reason i'm even debating between 3.90s and 4.10s is the fact that the first 3 gears are pretty close in the M12 transmission, and I don't want to over gear it. But, if I will benefit E/T and/or mph from going with the 4.10, then 4.10s it is.

My shift point is 6800 rpm. As for the trap speed, I dont know what mph i'll be at, but i'm sure it won't hit the rev limiter before I cross the finish line. I'm guessing mid 120s somewhere.
As for tire size, I run 305/35 nitto drag radials at all times, and will get hoosiars on different wheels for the track if I have to for traction. The Nittos are 26 inch tall, I believe.
I went from a 12.10 with 345 gears to a 11.80 with 390 gears. Nice improvement but its especially noticeable part throttling around town. 99 6 speed car 410 rwhp 390 rwtq

I agree, my experience was .3 as well from 3.42 to 4.10

I agree with statman. Find out how tall your new drag tires are and your best guess on mph thru the traps. There are many calculators to fill in the blanks. Here's a link to one of them. http://www.ringpinion.com/calculators/calc_rpm.aspx
I would try several to be sure.

You do realize this neither easy or inexpensive to do in a C5. Special tools and experience is required.

Good point. We removed the rear cradle, differential, and transmission on our own in the garage and took just the diffential to a shop with the gear that we purchased. IIRC they charged me $250 to do the install. So with the cost of the gear we have less than $500 in the swap which is more than a 12-bolt gear change.

Were both passes with full traction? What were your 60fts?
I'm staying with a 26 inch tall tire. If I have to, I can rev it a little farther if I have to crossing the finish line, but I highly doubt that'll be necessary.
