98 Alternator Question
My wife and I met some people for dinner tonight and as we were going to leave the battery on my 98 was dead. We found someone with some jumper cables and jumped it. The voltage would then only get up to 12.5v under throttle and back down to 12.0v at idle. I let it idle for a few minutes and it never changed. Every time I hit the throttle and tried to move it it would die. The alternator smelled and felt extremely hot. I was going to just swap it out in the morning but a search shows me that the 97-99 alternators are different. I don't want to go out and buy a replacement alternator that will throw a lot of codes, but my car is sitting in a parking lot right now and needs rescued in the morning. Thanks in advance.

you could drive it home on a new battery even with a bad alternator. just turn off as much as possible and go straight home.
based on the weirdness you have mentioned i would just disconnect the main power lead from the alt. wrap it in black tape. unplug the harness and cruise it back on home
