Default 99 magnesium wheels

Hello,

I just had to replace my two rear tires because one found a screw near the sidewall sidewall one of them. When the tire place removed the tires from the second rim, they found that the inside bead section of magnesium wheel was cracked in about 8 places and then when they went to look again at the other one, it had one crack. They did not create this problem as when I looked at the Goodyear tires that I took off, I could see that t the magnesium corrosion has been on the tires for a while. Are these magnesium wheels prone to cracking or am I just the lucky guy to get a defective set? I do not want to buy more problems. Has anyone ever heard of these magnesium wheels cracking? I can`t really drive the car until I get new wheels.

84 Owner,

Yes. I have a crack in the inner rim of one of my rear mag wheels. I didn't find it until I pulled the wheels to replace the GY Runflats with Hankook Ventus 12's. I didn't like the look of the ($3,000.00 option in '99!) mags anyway so I found a set of original wagon wheels locally to replace them.

Final story...I have a set of almost new GY Runflats in the barn mounted on a set of original Italian mag wheels with one little crack in one of the rims. (Kinda like being a little bit pregnant.)

My big question is...waddya do with a set of GY Runflats mounted on 3/4's of a good set of OEM mags?

I guess the question for both of us is...can these puppies be repaired, and, is it worth it.

To finally answer your question...yes, they crack.

Best regards,

Gunny John

Magnesium wheels as they age and are cycled (used) they can crack. This is common. Having a Pantera with these type of wheels it is something we have to watch. They can be fixed by experts. What we do to check is to strip the paint and do dye penetrant checks to look for cracks. Heat treating a wheel can reduce/relax the stresses and add life to them. After any welding they MUST be stress relieved by heat treatment. We do that because the wheels are unique to the car. With the Corvette, the aluminum wheels look the same but are heavier. If it were me, I would replace with aluminum wheels unless you are a real speed freak and need to reduce weight and have money to burn.
