Took the car out today, washed it, and took it for a hot lap to get the water off completely. Got in it tonight to go downtown for Hot August nights and my drivers window won't go down. This car does not have 28,000 miles on it yet.
My question is if this is common, and simple to fix? I've got my FSM I bought when the car was new, but was hoping for some greater insight before I go to work on it. Got a friend coming from Seattle bringing a 85 for us to drive around Lake Tahoe, and my windows broke. HELP?
Try opening the door 100% and press on that rubber boot in the crease with your right hand while simultaneously holding the down button with yor left hand. There are wires in there that, when opening and closing the door, sometimes may kink. At times, my window won't go down either and all I do is open my door a little and press that rubber boot. Works every time.
I am certainly not the best guy to offer help, but I delt with the problem i this way.
I opened up the door and removed the motor so I could slide the window down and push it up to close. Not all the way down, because if it went too far down , I had to pop the door panel off and push the glass up . I left the thing unscrewed , held by the clips while I sought understanding.
My window register was fine, the motor went south. The usual Corvette parts sources only sold the entire deal, a la GM . Went to the local parts store and bought a motor only, after I failed to remember the location of the rebuilding service I used about 22 years ago.
There are many posts here about the details. It's pretty simple, but I understand you can really screw things up working inside the door. One of the computers lives there, I'm told.
Oh, and that plastic flap that covers the big opening is expensive. Yes, the plastic sheet stuck on with the glop is a 45 dollar part. Not that I would ever buy one at that price.
Very common for windows to work one day, and stick in the up position the next time you use them.
Since there are no limit switches, the window stops when the motor stalls against the stops. I think the drive gears get in a bind, and jams the motor.
Many times you can unstick the motor by tapping on the motor, or the door panel, while hitting the down button.
I have found that by rolling the window up, then bumping the glass down a fraction of an inch, the window does not stick. It is not always the fault of the motor because I have had brand new assemblies stick, but have not had one stick since I have been backing the window down just enough to unload the drive gears.
Thank you very much to all who responded. I held the button down while shutting the door, and bingo, it rolled down. I had spent an hour or so today in the service manuals I bought when it was new, but this forum always seems to have the simple answer.
