Default Grinding gears

I got grinding in 3rd 4th & reverse. All other gears engage no problem. Is this clutch, transmission, master/slave cylinder? Need to to know what kind of $ this gonna cost me

92k
Longtubes & catback (no big power adders)
Bought it with only 80k so not sure if I'm possibly still on a stock clutch?

Hard to tell exactly but usually grinding has a few causes from what I have seen:

-Bad pressure plate/ slave cylinder ( but yours seems ok in other gears so less likely)

-Syncros in trans are going bad ( try to rev match before going into gear and see if it helps. If it does it is most likely weak syncros from what I have seen)

-Broken keys in trans. (Mine grinded going into 3rd and I found 2 broken keys.)

Ive also had strange problems on my GTO like the pressure plate bolts backing out causing shifting issues.

Have you started with the basics and bled the clutch?

I was hoping tranny wouldn't b the culprit but it sounds like it is. I am replacing the clutch and have a leaking master cylinder. But the big problem is bad synchros. Looking like a bigger job than I bargained.

Yea It sticks but if you rebuild it right you shouldnt have any issues.

I rebuilt mine in GTO and Vette with my local shop.

I added Billet keys, new syncros, bronze fork pads, steal 3-4 fork.

The vette was a more serious build with the addition of a Gforce Mainshaft.

Also replace the slave cylinder and upgrade to an LS7 clutch and remote bleeder line while you are in there. You will thank yourself later

My car started faintly grinding going into 3rd gear occasionally. I put a new Monster Stage 2 clutch in with new slave/master and all and now everything works perfect, even put Amsoil in the transmission at the same time. Been in for 15,000 miles and my car doesn't grind any gears what so ever. This might not be your issue but it was mine. Hope you get lucky and it's something easy!

Thanks PEETYZ. Looks like I'm getting the tranny rebuilt. Already was going with LS7 clutch but also going to replace the master & slave while we're in there. All this and a big cam, got half a new car almost.

Dont overlook replacing the couplers inside the torque tube. Yours will most likely be old and cracked.

Trans issues are never fun Ive spend more rebuilding my 2 trans (GTO and vette) then I did on my used procharger kit.....but best to check it now before you hurt anything else.

Best of luck man.

My 3rd gear keys broke on my 01 Z when I had headers only and i don't beat the shifts honestly.

yikes...

Ouch. Waiting for some hardened parts now. Got me thinking bigger horsepower now since the drivetrain can handle it now. Guess it's better in the long run. This build still doesn't beat the 2 rear ends & front end rebuilds on my silverado. I should be back on the road by this weekend.
