I bought a used z06 a few weeks ago with an aftermarket shifter and I want to switch it back to stock. Today, I removed the interior console and got down to the shifter but couldn't figure out how to remove it.
Does anyone know what kind of shifter this is and how to remove it?
I've removed the 4 bolts on the shifter base but it still won't budge.
Grab the shifter up high towards the **** & pull/rock from left to right.
Once it gets a small gap between the shifter base & the shifter box,
you should be able to pull the shifter straight up & out of the shifter box.
Seems that the shifter base is froze to the gasket between the box & base....it just needs to be spererated/broke free.
Oh, the shifter you have pictured is a MGW.
You won't have a problem selling it here on the forum.
I tried doing that for a while. I shook the crap out of it but all that happened was the shifter just moving around in neutral. I also tried to separate the gasket but there's hardly any room there. I'll take another look tonight, thanks!
Just curious. What didn't you like about it? Most people on this forum think it's the best thing since sliced bread.
Two reasons:
1) I'm autocrossing the car and it's not stock legal.
2) The shifter is a little stiff and requires more effort to get into gears. I'm used to it now, especially after changing out the transmission fluid this past weekend.
Looks like they used some sort of sealer or glue to seal it to the box. See if you can use a drift punch and a hammer and give it a good tap to the rear to unseat the sealer. Im not talking about beating it todeath; just a good whack to unseat the sealer.
If you have to use a STOCK OEM shifter, I strongly recommend that you install a C6 shifter. MUCH better than the OEM C5 shifter and its still OEM. Just replace the stick. You have a ZO6 box with the solid bushings. The new C6 OEM Shifter with the box will come with RUBBER BUSHINGS

I'd be more than happy to take that shifter off your hands. I have 2 stock shifters you can have for the cost of shipping if youve already sold it.
They'll fit in a usps med priority flat rate box and I'll include a stock shift **** as well. Let me know what you want for that mgw shifter.
Thanks for the help guys. Right after driving home from work, I took everything apart down to the shifter. I figured it would be a good time to attempt the removal again it since the gasket had warmed up considerably. After rocking the shifter back and forth in neutral a few times, it finally popped off!
Cduarte - I'll let you know when/what I decide to do with the mgw I removed.
One last question - is the rubber isolator that goes over the shifter different on an aftermarket shifter vs the stock shifter? I think I remember seeing a gap when I was putting it back on. During a test drive, I could hear more transmission noise because of it.

Thanks!
The rubber cover that goes over the shifter requires cutting to fit the MGW shifter. This is one of the negatives for this shifter. Most people aren't bothered by it but you never know when you may want to go back to stock or another make of shifter.
So, what you will need now is a new rubber cover. I'm sure they are still sold by GM. Unless you can find a used one.
Keep in mind that if you don't seal that area properly, you will not only get a lot of drivetrain noise but loads of heat from the exhaust.
The lower boot part number is 10332368 and costs about $25.
I have driven mine without the boot while testing shifter, and you get a LOT of transmission noise and heat without it...
plus it seals out dust and dirt...
