put key in ignition, unlock column, remove neg terminal from battery and remove key.. Unlocked.

Any reason that wouldnt work to unlock the column for the install?

I believe the reason is to permanently disable the column lock. If the relay fails (which will eventually happen) you will be stuck with no way of driving home as your steering wheel will be locked.

If your column unlocks when you turn the key on, you don't need the unlocker. Do as stated above and then install the LMC5 so it never relocks.

I understand why the CLB is to be installed, i was asking if unlocking it and hooking the battery would be the best way to unlock it for the install..

If you have the unlocker I would recommend locking the steering wheel prior to installing the LCM5. I just installed mine last night. I just figured it was easier to lock the wheel because when I got to the step of unlocking it was simple to test if it worked.

If you currently unlock when the key is turned, you should be OK to follow the instructions above, i.e. turn key, unlock column, disconnect battery (check wheel is still unlocked), and install the LMC5 per the instructions that came with it. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call Richard at Compliance Parts, he was a great help to me when mine locked and I was stranded.

sounds right to me. when its unlocked and the battery is off it should be ready to go.. dont turn the wheel to the lock position, not sure if it will relock or not.
