Hey everyone, got a problem that I hope someone can help me out with. 1998 C5 Automatic. The previous transmission slipped, then went out completely so for the last two days, I worked to replace the transmission. I put a transaxle from a donor car with 50K on it. Today I topped off the fluid in the pan, fired it up and noticed this problem. When I put the vehicle into a gear, the RPM's drop a little like they normally do indicating a load on the engine. However, no matter what gear is selected, the axles never move. I know the axles are in place because if I spin one tire, the other one moves, and if the vehicle is in park, I can't spin either tire. This says to me that the diff and ring/pinion are ok. I'm thinking it has something to do with the pump or a solenoid. I know the transmission cooler lines are empty as is the cooler itself since the changeover. However, the fluid level has not gone down. Meaning since the time I topped it off at the fill plug right after it was installed, no fluid has moved through the lines. Has anyone has experience with this? Please let me know as soon as you can. Thanks everyone.
When you bolted the converter to the flex plate, did you have to pull it forward a quarter to 3/8" or so to bolt it up?
Sounds like its not pumping fluid at all.
You might loosen one of the radiator fittings while its idling and see if fluid is there. The trans was reported to be good right?
Ron
Hi Ron,
Yes the torque converter came forward about 1/4" when I bolted it to the torque tube plate. I will open a trans line to see if anything is moving but since the fluid hasn't gone down, I would be on it still being empty. It has 4.5 quarts in it right now and hasn't gone down. The trans was reported to me to be in good working order when I got it. It only had a 30 day warranty though and that has passed a long time ago.
Ladies and Gentlemen, may I present Mr. William of Ockham! I dropped the pan to check and see what the condition of the filter was in only to find out that there was no filter. The wrecking yard had removed the fluid, removed the filter, and put back the fluid. Go figure. So with a new filter installed, transmission works perfectly. Thanks all.
