Default Can anyone explain this?

Trying to identify some drive train issues. Hesitation while at a steady RPM in all gears. Grinding and clicking from the rear end. Also some shifting isues. Identified the shifting issues. now im onto the drivetrain. I pulled apart the TT and found this along with some ground up either rubber or aluminum. Can anyone explain how this would happen?

Bad couplers, bent shaft, maybe both. In any case, you sure have worn out that centralizer. Have your shaft checked before you replace the couplers.

The couplers are bran new and there is zero rubbing on the inside of the shaft. I just bought the car a few weeks ago.

That centralizer is, or was rubbing. That is the rubber you found inside the TT. The only way it could wear like that is to rub on the TT inside wall.

Yes. But how is it rubbing. The couplings are undamaged. The bearings have a little ruff roll but nothing major. the whole shaft would have to be pinned to the side of the tube held there at some point.

its possible the couplers were changed before without replacing the snubber. This could cause quite a bit of vibration. There is no way you could replace the snubber without cutting off and re-welding the ends of the drive shaft. The best thing to do would be to order a new driveshaft. However, you will need to have the new driveshaft balanced by a driveshaft shop with the front and rear spindles attached. Clicking is usually from bad axles. Grinding could be synchros or bad clutch hydraulics.

I think that is the best explanation. The trans seems fine. Im going to change the slave, this piece and the bearings on the TT. Also the shifter seems to be missing the alignment piece so im going to order a new shifter and housing for the car.

The Axles might have been siezed and not able to float wich might have made that problem. Im going to grease it up and see how it feels.

I’ve been told,, its caused by excessively worn parts inside the TT

OR

Someone MECHANICALLY OVER REVED the engine by running 3rd gear to red line and selecting 2nd gear when they really wanted 4th gear.

I had the EXACT SAME wear on my centralizer and I had ZERO worn rubber couplers or bearings and the prop shaft was STRAIGHT. There was plastic inside the TT housing but not really any rubber coupler bits.

So,,,, I just reassembled it and its been fine ever since.

It had me wondering,,,,, how in the hell did someone mechanically over rev the engine. It wasn’t anything that I did and I am the original owner of the damn car.

SO,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I asked the wife..

ME: Hey honey,,, HAVE YOU,,, ever tried to speed shift the ZO6 from 3rd gear and maybe grabbed 2nd gear instead of 4th gear..

WIFE: Well,,,,,,, honey,,,,, It happened one time!!

Then I asked my Son the same question..........

SON: WELLLLLLL Maybe....

How did you notice there is a problem? That sounds like its more reasonable an explanation.

I DIDNT know that there was an issue until I opened it up to make sure that the couplers and bearings were in good shape.

I didnt have ANY drive train issues with the drive train except that the clutch peddle would stick to the floor That I can contribute to a bad master cylinder!

I replaced the clutch, pressure plate, pilot brg, slave added a remote bleedre and installed a TRANSZILLA T60/60 MN12 trans and beefed up the rearend with C6 ZO6 parts

My Diff was done by RTK from a previous owner "We had installed micro polished 3.90's, C6 Z06 shafts and the upgraded clutch springs. All new seals too." This was done last thanksgiving.

His main shaft out of the trans broke inside the Diff and did a little damage it looks like. I'm going to clean it out to make sure there are no pieces left and file down some of the damage to the housing. Then reassemble it.

Also i was looking into the axles being frozen so im going to replace those as well.

Do you know where that piece is that's worn? I'm going to bring this shaft to a drive shaft shop to see if its still strait.

You cant just replace that part. Its not a GM Parts counter part.

So,,,,,, you have what is left or get new TT. I wouldnt worry about.

I would cut off the snubber before you put it back together if you plan on re-using the drive shaft to get rid of the imbalance it will create. It's only really there in case things go wrong. However, without it, if things do go wrong, it could seriously damage the torque tube.
