Column Lock Bypass Please review corrective action

I recently experienced pull key wait 10 seconds so I did the follwing research. I read many posts here and think I have an understanding of what I need to do I have outlined what I have found out and how I will address the issue. Please review let me know if you agree with my action plan and assumptions.
I had the GMVIS record pulled and was looking for Column lock information. The record shows the following:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Order Type: 70 - RETAIL - STOCK
Field Actions: 0 Open
Required Field Actions Open field actions are highlighted
Type Number Original Nbr Description Release Date Status
Product Safety Recall N040006 04006 ELECTRONIC COLUMN LOCK SYSTEM
04/19/2004 Closed
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Some additional information. My column still locks so my assumption
is there is no additional column lock bypass installed.
Just recently when pulling out of the garage the car died, on the display was pull key and wait 10 seconds I did pull the key and restarted with out any issues. I have driven the car 300 miles since the event stop and started numerous times without issues, or any messages.
Corrective action I would need to take install a bypass device.
I am leaning toward LMC5 type device. I belive once the bypass is installed I will still need to get the 2mph fuel shutoff removed.
Can you confirm a couple of assumptions
1) Since the column is not locked I do not need to purchase the jumper kit to unlock the column.
2) Installing the bypass will put the coulmn into a permenant unlock state.
3) With the bypass installed I can still be hit by the fuel shutoff if this is not turned off.
4) I might still see messages, but they should have no impact on driveability with the Bypass installed, and 2 mph fuel shut off de-programmed
Thank You

I don't understand what your saying here????
I am trying to say if for some reason I were to get a messages after the bypass is installed by de programming the fuel shutoff I would still be able to drive. If the bypass is installed but the fuel program shutoff is still on and I get a message I would not be able to drive even though the column was not locked.
Thank You
Joe
I was stuck in a parking garage, and, as a C5 towing veteran , it was not a choice towing situation .
I finally just shook the wheel, and the correct lock function returned. It occasionally happened a couple of times after that, and I just shook the wheel. Not the best for the column swivels, but they are still tight.
It's been fine for months now, but once in a while I will notice upon removal of the key , it is not registered as a key event, the automatic locks don't throw, so I reinsert the key and get a key removal read. That seems to prevent issues as the system wears.
I like the column lock, when it works well, and don't want to lose the feature.
Just a different approach, hope it broadens your options.

I LOVE the last TWO COMMENTS and they are FACTS!

Are you good close friends with Mr Murphy!

TRUE STORY!
I purchased my 98 Coupe new early in 98. I read ALL the stories about COLUMN LOCK ISSUES and all the FIXES.
My thoughts were,,,,,,,,, My car works PERFECT,,, This isnt an issue that I need to worry about..

So.. 6 months after the warranty was done,,, I was at Carlisle PA getting ready to drive home to CT.. I stopped at the CAR WASH area and washed the car. As I was ready to leave,, BLAMO COLUMN LOCK!!

I was LUCKY,, and just like you and was able to bang and beat it back into operation.
My next move was to order a Corvettes of Houston CLB and install it.
PS.. I have Mr. Murphys address... I wrote him and told him THANKS! If you need it,, let me know.

ORDER AND INSTALL A CLB

I called the guy with what I considered the best lock product and asked if I could drive out to Malibu to pick one up.
He told me no, and seemed like a good guy to do business with. Thats as far as I took it, since I think I understand what might have happened and it is now corrected.
I think of the steering wheel shake as the spare tire I never had. If it becomes a bigger concern I have the guys number. My car is still pretty solid all round and don't want to complicate the situation with more electronics if possible.
I guess it just depends on what you consider "broke" , as in, " if it ain't broke........"
i enjoy the car and want to keep it as original as possible, I think old original cars are more interesting to ride than a car restored to modern. Few cars have this type of feature. I think I know why.
Plus, I plan on taking this car up into the Redwoods. If, big if, I leave the car at a trailhead, i will want every possible security so the car will be where I left it.

I would consider getting the LCM5 with the unlock kit and keep it in the car. After watching the video the install is very easy and can be done on the side of the road. If you are going to the Redwoods or other remote location you might want to consider having this as and option vs trying to get towed to a dealer that can not really fix the issue.

Column Lock or No Column Lock,,, If someone wants your car bad enough, it's GONE.... Park you car in the woods,, All it takes is a tow truck or a flat bed and its G O N E !
Whos going to stop them?
From my previous owners maintenance records I can see it did happen to him, but I wasn't about to let it happen to me. He apparently only did a factory fix.
To Strand rider - from what I've read in the forum, I think a stolen vette is far less likely than a locked column!
