Before you get too deep into differential repairs,, lets look at some other common stuff that can cause issues
WHEEL HUBS
I would check each wheel hub for excessive play. Jack one rear wheel and grip the tire at the top and bottom. PUSH + PULL on the TOP & BOTTOM and see if there is ANY play in the rear wheel hub. There should NOT be any.
While that wheel is off the ground, put the trans mission in neutral and see if you can turn that wheel. It SHOULD be difficult to turn. If its easy to turn, you most likely have a broken Belliview Spring and or severly worn clutches.
Do the same for the other rear wheel.
Do you hear ANY abnormal noises in the rear?
Do you hear any abnormal noises when you turn left or right?
Check the CV Joints for damaged boots and leaking grease and make sure there isnt any lost motion in either joint if you grasp the propellor shaft and pust pull it.
Have you ever changed the differential fluid? If not, it woulkd be wise to repolace it with 75/90 GL5 differentil lube.
Here are sever al post that will allow you to see how the C5 differential is constructed and how easy it is to UP-GRADE with better parts:

Gene Culley www.gmpartshouse.com and DTE have anything that you need to upgrade
If you replace the pinion parts or ring gear or bearings, you MUST have the Kent Moore tool to align the gears.
