Does the low beam headlight bulb have a larger base than the high beam bulb? I am trying to replace a HID bulb and it just seems to "fall" into the hole. It has a 9006 tag on it, but if the metal ring on the back is what it locks into, it is too small
Yes, and the locking tabs are aligned differently. Some people make it work by shaving one of the tabs and adding an oversized O ring around the base of the bulb. But this could lead to citations.
Its not something I want to do for a bulb swap, but how hard is it to pull out the assembly (or at least lift it up to access the back of the lense?)
during a search, I read a post that says it takes 3 mins to pull out
Raise the headlight door, either manually at the motor or turn lights on at switch then back 1 click to leave door up with lights off. Then remove black plastic shroud (3 screws). I remove the forward hood bump stop to give more room also. Then you can reach around behind the HL assembly.
I have tried from the side with the bump stop removed, and from underneath. All I can get on the bulb (HID with tiny base) is my finger tips. My arm is fairly large, so it is pretty hard to get to it from either direction, and impossible to see what the "issue" is when it doesn't go in
Worked on it 45+ mins last night and didn't get anywhere
It "feels" like the bulb base is too small and going in too far, and I can look through the lens and see the red washer, thus the reason for my original post.
If the assembly is a PITA to remove, I guess I will try some mirrors tonight to see if the bulb is oriented correctly.
Well it looks like my problem is the cheap tail ebay bulbs. They have SUPER thin tabs compared to the ones that came out. I put the blown one back in and it fits "pretty good" (not as tight as I would like, but not bad.
Time to order new bulbs and wait
