Default Pull key wait 10 seconds message.

I got this message one time so I did what it said and the message went away. The car has started twice with no message since then. What could have caused this? I've also read about the column lock bypass. How can I know if my car has all ready had this done? If it hasn't I want to go ahead and do it for peace of mind. Is being stranded in my future since I got this message?

Its a 04 Z06 M12. I'm not 100 percent sure but now that we're talking about it I don't believe my column locks at all. I'll check in the morning. The battery should be good, it was a new ac delco the dealership installed about 2 monthes ago when I bought the car but I'll ride it to work and test it. I'll report back later. Thanks

Hi,
Just purchased my '01 with 39,000 miles last month and I had experienced the "pull key" or "service column lock" DIC a few times...the Service Column Lock" DIC warning did not go away this time and luckily my car was in the driveway. Purchased the LMC5 and just installed it yesterday and no more messages and no fuel shut off at 1.5 MPH !!...My car must have had one of the recalls performed because with the key out of the ignition I could still turn the wheel.Battery voltage from I have been reading is critical in getting these messages and luckily I hope I never have to get towed now...8VETTE7 is the forums "resident expert" on this area if you need more info !!

Makes a difference.

Most common cause of the column lock symptoms is a weak or bad battery or loose or corroded battery terminals. Start with having the battery load tested and if you have a Digital Multi Meter (DMM) measure the voltage across the battery posts with the neg battery cable disconnected. The electronics in these cars is not happy when the voltage measured as described is 12.5 volts or less. Dash gauge readings don't help here because they tell you the state of health of the charging system and NOT the state of health of the battery.

If the voltage is 12.5 or less then you need to charge the battery fully. A fully charged battery will measure 12.7 to 12.9 volts or more measured as described.

In answer to your question in blue above, if the column locks with NO KEY in the ignition, then there is NOT a CLB or LMC5 installed. If the car is a pre2001 with automatic trans then you need to LOOK to see if there is a CLB or LMC5 installed. The column in a pre 2001 automatic trans car will NOT lock with NO KEY in the ignition so that test doesn't tell you anything.
From reading your previous posts, I think you mean a POST 2001 automatic will NOT lock. Isn't there a timing thing where if you remove and insert the key very quickly, you can get the "remove key" warning. It seems like I read somewhere there was some scenario when it gave that warning due to key insertion timing, but I don't remember what it was.

My steering column does not lock. I haven't called a dealership yet but I did have my hand on the key talking to someone and I actually pulled it in and out a few times while talking when I got the message.
