How do you guys get this thing hooked up without the cord hanging down the dash. Any details would help, I'm about to order one. Ever get a speeding ticket with it?
Although V1 is good, it is not infallable. I had close calls with it too....called 'instant on.' Be careful, I had read that new type of radar (lidar) is out that can defeat the v1.
Do they have a radar out that will detect lidar? I seen something in the news here in Austin that cops were going to be using something to catch more speeders but did not get to watch to find out what they were using. Anyone know? Thanks
Great install sites. I ran my power cord completely behind my dash and between my dash and windshield. Mounted the V1 on the top of dash. They say to mount it high but after using radar detectors for 10 years, have not seen a difference. Also won't fall down when you hit a bump at 120 mph. Yes do not speed alone. Instant on means it is only putting out radar signals when the police officer is shooting at someone. You can pick up the signal as he/she is shooting people in front of you. This is why range is the most important feature for a detector. I have had 2 tickets with my radar detector over the last 5 years. Not bad considering I double the speed limit when I drive. It will save you 9 out of 10 times. Also Lazer - you are toast, no defense. When the detector goes off he/she is measuring your speed. Good luck.
I know you can still get a ticket, was just wondering how many have with the V1. Anyhow, great install site! Think I will get one ASAP! Doesn't throw many false alarms? I was gonig to get the passport 8500 as some claim its just as good or better for less, but still thinking the V1 is better.
A detector will USUALLY not save you from laser- the laser beam is so tightly focused that you can seldom detect it except when it is aimed at your car, and by then, as he said, you're toast. But every now and then you will get enough scatter from a car targeted ahead of you to alert your detector. Also, the C5 (especially dark colors) with no front plate, the headlights closed and foglights on; is difficult to clock with laser. Our Valentine saved my wife last Fall in Wisconsin- the Officer kept trying to get a reading over about 20 seconds while my wife slowed down from 80, never came after her. Also, you will occasionally get false laser alerts from some neon signs, other car taillights, etc but much less often than false radar alerts.
As mentioned above, drive 100-300 yds behind a "scout" so that he can trip the radar/laser for you. Keep your eyes open for marked/unmarked squad cars on motion. A ticket is a ticket, no matter how you got it.
A good detector and an alert mind will eliminate about 90% of your tickets.
Radar detectors only help when the cops are shooting. I've been pulled over and ticketed twice in the last 3 months but there was no radar and the cop was no where in sight (hence why I've hired a lawyer for those 2 :bs tickets)
The thing about lazer is the officer has to be right on the road where as radar he can be way off in the trees. Keep your eyes open and don't count on the detector all alone. I was pulled over and the officer said he had me on lazer, no way, I would have seen him. He just guessed at my speed. He ticketed me for 97 in a 55. He was way off, I way going 140!! :blueangel:
Consider yourself lucky with that police. Before my V1 days, I was tagged doing over 100 on my Supra --- he wrote down 98mph. I did not argue and had not asked to see the speed gun...over a hundred will easily land me in jail! Same with a friend of mine...I guess with excessive speed they are forgiving. They let you out easy for whatever reason I dont know. Could be that they get more $$ if you pay the ticket (more speed=more moolah for every mph over), or it's too much of a hassle to take you for a ride and book you for a minor offense such as speeding in a non-residential area/highway.
Speaking of laser false alarms, I just bought my third Valentine. It seems to works as all the others, but I have noticed an unusual number of laser false alarms on vehicle rear mounted LED lights, especially if they are mounted up high like some SUV's.
Anybody else notice this?
Just a few days ago, I got my only 3rd or 4th laser illumination and it scared the heck out of me. I get so few LASER alarms that I usually just keep going.

All of our V1s do it, those LEDs on the new Trailblazers and Envoys are the worse, sets off the Laser warning everytime. :yesnod: :yesnod:
Yeah I get those too. My V1 is about a year old now. Made my heart pound everytime I see "L" on my V1, that was when the Envoy and Trailblazer just came out. Now Im used to it.
If they do, what if you mount a row of LED's on the front of the car (near where they usually shoot) and when the LASER unit illuminates our car, the LEDs sense this and light up to confuse the LASER unit. Probably a wild hair idea!!!!!!
