What are my options when buying lifters. I called my local parts manager and he quoted me 25 bucks per lifter(17122490). Are there any aftermarket lifters that outperform the stockers?
Phillip
I just got off the phone with Summit and Competition Cams has a set of 16 lifters p/n 850 for 204.99. Has anyone tried these or have any information?
Phillip
These are noiser than stock but should do you great.
Levi,
Noisier than stock. I gotta get them! I just got off the phone with Summit racing and ordered those style lifters for the LS1. The ones in the Thunder Racing catalog are for a SB chevy. They now have LS1 specific lifters good to 7k. When is that clutch going in?
Phillip
I believe my engine has the Comp Cam lifters in it and they have worked great so far.. My valvetrain noise is much quieter now with the 436 than when I had my heads/cam on the stock lifters last year.

Phil, good deal my man. The clutch goes in as soon as my 4.10s get here :jester Let us know if that curbs the ticking problem ;)
Just alittle FYI, I picked the Comp Cam Lifters up from Summit for $200 compared to the factory ones which were $400. :) A detailed report will follow wednesday or thursday. I am going to tear the motor down tonight.

I almost went with the comps instead of reusing the stockers......until I talked to comp. comp reccomends .001-.003 preload with their lifters.they told me that they did not reccomend their use the stock non-adjustable valvetrain and that I would have to have adjustable rockers to achieve the reccomended preload.they reccomend .030-.050 with the stock lifters.mine came in at .035,but still make noise........by the way,you do realize that you have to pull the heads to change the lifter don't you?
I did my own heads and cam install also :D ....I wanted to change out my lifters until I remembered that I had to pull the heads.....I really didn't want to pull them a week after I put them back on....sometimes little details slip people's minds.....I'm an old school smallblock guy,I'm forgot that the retainer bolts were covered by the heads. it's a lot of work to do over again this soon.
Tom,
Swapping the Lifters out is probably a 4 hour job at the most. I am not really worried about taking the heads off because it is such a quick job. With my helper I can probably do the swap in 2 hours. My helper said were like an NHRA team because we seem to be breaking down the motor every weekend.
Phillip
** I just got off the phone with comp cams and they said that the lifters are identical to the stockers. They both require the same preload and will work interchangeabily(is that even a word)
Man,I wish I was that fast!....maybe I'm just too cheap to spring for bolts and gaskets again this soon.I'm wondering if the head gaskets are gonna stand the nitrous shot that is coming.if they don't,when I pull the heads to install new gaskets,I'll put in some comp R's and jesel sportsman rockers. It never ends!............

* I talked to two different techs on two seperate days.if one of them would have told me that the lifters would interchange with the stockers at the same preload, there would deff be a set in my engine! I was warned against using them......I wish these techs could agree on something.
It was my understanding that the lifters in the car are already a good quality. That buying any HP lifter would not see any gains to speak of.
Are the lifters in your car no good? is that why you are needing to replace them? Sorry if I have not kept up to speed with your car if in fact you have had a failure of some sort.
Unless you have a bad lifter, there's no point in putting the Comp ones in. I had em in my camaro (LS1), and now I just put the same topend stuff in my Vette but left the stock lifters in this time...no difference. The comp's look identical as well, and also didnt seem to care what hte preload was set at. I've tried all sorts of preload...down to near 0 and they acted just like stock lifters.
