Thanks to Patches for the great overview and LAPD for great price/quick service. Man getting that key out was a bear. I'm not sure how I finally got it to pop cause I was getting mad and ready to cut the damn thing off when it just flew out. Also, it is so different from the stock shifter I couldn't feel reverse when I tested it and was a bit worried I'd done something wrong, but no problem.
After about 100 miles, I'm still getting used to it. I kept the factory installed springs and turned the adjustment nut back a bit, but this sucker is really stiff feeling. I like the short throw, but wish it felt a little less clunky. I'm happy with it so far, but I wouldn't say ecstatic. I may try the softer springs if I feel like fighting with it again.
I first tried it with the stock spring setup for a couple of months and then pulled the inner springs out to soften the side-to-side force. Mine started out stiff as well but has become easier to shift with use.
iused both soft springs and the spring pressure is about right-only 500 miles so far. gotta remember to keep outward pressure on 5 to 6 shift or you get 4th. 1st and reverse are real short catch-a little vague. once you get used to the feel, it's great. first 4 gears are perfect, so the racers should love it. :yesnod: :yesnod:
Yes...getting that "T" shaped key out is hard. The instructions tell you to pull straight up. I pulled until my face turned blue. Then I placed a screw driver under the T and pryed up...it came out like butter  I think they dont tell you to pry because you are using teh stock shift **** for leverage and you may ruin it. Mine is fine.
My shifts have definatly improved and are much quicker but I also don't like the mechanical feel. Mine isn't broken in nor have I adjusted springs yet.
I put my Hurst shifter in this weekend too. They call that thing a demon key for a reason. I tried pulling straight up with vice grips and got nothing. I tried prying with a screwdriver and actually broke the tabs off the demon key. (By the way, I figured the **** was a goner and so I really leaned into it with the screwdriver several times. Amazingly, the **** sprung right back with no damage.) I tried pulling more with the vice grips.
Finally, the trick that worked was to lock the vice grips on as tightly as I could and pound upward on the vice grips with a hammer. (The smaller jaw of the vice grips bends out to make a perfect hammering spot.)
Other than that stupid demon key, the install was pretty easy.
I installed mine a couple of weeks ago and I machined it down 1 1/2" so it is nice and short. I installed the stiffer springs on the passenger side location to help the 2nd to 3rd shift. So far I love it. It is just right. :yesnod:
